In the year, 2006, the USAID’s Global Development Alliance supported the Rural Electrification Program in India which was a partnership between Winrock International India and the General Electric Company (GE). There were also other partners such as the Malavalli Power Plant Private Limited, the International Institute of Education and the Winrock International.
USAID contributed up to $600,000 for the program while GE brought in an investment of $2.7 million including its network of experts and partners in direct and indirect funding.
The program promoted commercially viable rural electrification by using renewable energy technologies. Access to clean energy was ensured through GE power generation technologies, which utilized biomass, wind and solar resources.
