The Howard G. Buffett Foundation is a private foundation which gives millions of dollars in grants annually to organizations working on agriculture, water and conflict resolution primarily in Africa and Latin America. Most internationally focused Buffett grantees are non-profits, foreign NGOs, or universities working on development, socio-political, and environmental issues in one of the focused regions.
The Foundation, being named after Howard G. Buffett was established in 1999 and is continuously working to improve the standard of living and quality of life of most impoverished and marginalized people around the world by providing funding in three core areas.

- Food security, with a focus on resource development for farmers
- Water security, particularly related to agriculture
- Conflict resolution (and hunger)
- Post-conflict development

- Latin America– El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Mexico
- Africa– Great Lakes Region, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and agricultural research in South Africa

Past Projects
- $57,537 to U.S.-based non-profit Sudan Sunrise for vote monitoring and procedural election work in Sudan
- $2 million to Colombia’s Fundacion Pies Descalzos for a large, community school in the city of Cartagena, where poverty, poor sanitation, and inadequate resources are common
- $1 million to the Wageningen University in Nigeria for research on agriculture and nitrogen fixation
- $100 million in Africa’s Great Lakes region to support conservation, agriculture and economic development
How to apply?
The Foundation does not regularly requests for proposals. The Buffett Foundation often invites organizations it likes to apply for support. Would-be grantees can contact foundation staff and coordinate with them about project ideas.
