Executive Summary
This proposal aims to improve public health, environmental sustainability, and community well-being through expanded access to safe drinking water, improved sanitation facilities, and enhanced hygiene practices. Millions of people worldwide continue to face challenges related to inadequate water supply, poor sanitation infrastructure, and limited hygiene awareness, leading to waterborne diseases, reduced productivity, and increased vulnerability among vulnerable populations. The project will support the development of sustainable water and sanitation systems, strengthen community capacity, and promote behavior change initiatives that contribute to healthier and more resilient communities.
Background and Context
Access to clean water and adequate sanitation is fundamental to human health, economic development, and environmental sustainability. Safe water is essential for drinking, food preparation, agriculture, education, and healthcare services. Similarly, proper sanitation facilities help prevent disease transmission, protect water resources, and improve quality of life.
Despite global progress, many rural, peri-urban, and underserved communities continue to experience water shortages, inadequate sanitation infrastructure, and poor hygiene practices. Climate change, population growth, pollution, and aging infrastructure further increase pressure on water resources and sanitation systems.
Investments in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) contribute significantly to public health improvements, poverty reduction, gender equality, and sustainable development.
Problem Statement
Communities face several water and sanitation challenges:
- Limited access to safe and reliable drinking water
- Inadequate sanitation facilities and wastewater management
- High prevalence of waterborne diseases
- Poor hygiene awareness and practices
- Water source contamination and environmental degradation
- Disproportionate impacts on women, children, and vulnerable populations
These challenges affect health outcomes, educational attainment, economic productivity, and overall community resilience.
Goal
To improve access to clean water, safe sanitation, and hygiene services for vulnerable communities while promoting sustainable water resource management and public health.
Objectives
- Expand access to safe and affordable drinking water
- Improve sanitation infrastructure and wastewater management
- Reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases
- Promote hygiene education and behavior change
- Strengthen community capacity for water resource management
- Enhance environmental sustainability and water conservation
Project Description
The project will support the construction, rehabilitation, and management of water supply systems, sanitation facilities, and hygiene promotion programs. Activities will include drilling and rehabilitating boreholes, installing water treatment systems, constructing toilets and handwashing stations, and improving wastewater management infrastructure.
Community education campaigns will promote safe hygiene practices, including handwashing, water treatment, menstrual hygiene management, and sanitation maintenance. Local water committees will be established and trained to ensure effective management and sustainability of water and sanitation services.
Special attention will be given to schools, healthcare facilities, women, children, persons with disabilities, and underserved populations.
Key Activities
