Democracy House in partnership with the Institute of Governance and Development is seeking applications from eligible young people in Maldives to take part in the second Youth Leadership Program (YLP) during November/December 2011. This three-week YLP will be held in the Institute of Governance and Development in Bandos Island Resort.
About the Youth Leadership Program
The YLP will be attended by 40 young participants from across the country. The organizers intend to select two participants-one female and one male- from each atoll. During the program, the participants will be taught a range of subjects including personal development, leadership skills, cultural awareness and civic education.
YLP participants will also be taught about democratic principles and functions of the parliament through a series of parliamentary education sessions. The YLP will also focus on key societal issues such as child protection, gender inequality, conflict resolution, human rights and religious extremism and intolerance of minority groups.
Program Objectives
– Create dialogue amongst the youth on key issues and build their capacity in addressing those issues
– Develop and deepen skills on communication, decision-making and civic responsibilities and rights.
– Create and increase awareness on democratic principles and Parliamentary procedures.
Activities
Leadership Training Program:
All the YLP participants during the course of program will reside in Bandos Island Resort. The YLP training will take place from 20th November – 11th December.
The first leg of YLP is a Training Program that will include but will not be limited to Civic Education, Leadership Development and Parliamentary Education sessions. Experts from these areas will provide lectures and activities to build their leadership capacities. Field visit will also be organized to key institutions.
Mock Parliament Session:
In the second leg of the YLP, there will be a mock Parliament session to be organized in collaboration with the People’s Majlis. Experts in the field will provide parliamentary education sessions. At the end of this session YLP participants will participate in a mock parliamentary session where they will use the skills they have learnt and debate on a chosen bill. This will be later televised through the media partner of organizers.
Expenses Covered
The organizers will bear all the costs relating to transportation, food and accommodation of selected candidates.
