Executive Summary
Young people are at the forefront of the global climate crisis, inheriting its long-term consequences while possessing the creativity, energy, and commitment needed to drive transformative change. Across the world, youth are mobilizing to protect ecosystems, advocate for climate justice, and promote sustainable practices within their communities. However, many youth-led initiatives face significant barriers, including limited access to resources, insufficient technical support, and lack of recognition in decision-making processes.
The project Youth-Led Climate Action and Environmental Stewardship Programs aims to empower young people as leaders and innovators in climate action by strengthening their capacity, providing access to resources, and creating platforms for meaningful engagement. The initiative will support youth-led environmental projects, promote environmental stewardship, and foster partnerships between youth, communities, and local authorities.
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 4 (Quality Education)—the project will be implemented over 24 months. Through leadership development, community-based environmental action, and advocacy, the project will contribute to building resilient ecosystems and climate-conscious communities while amplifying youth voices in environmental governance.
Problem Statement
Climate change and environmental degradation pose severe threats to ecosystems, livelihoods, and human well-being. Rising temperatures, deforestation, biodiversity loss, pollution, and unsustainable resource use are undermining development gains and increasing vulnerability, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. While young people are increasingly aware of these challenges and eager to contribute to solutions, they often lack structured opportunities to lead climate action initiatives.
Youth engagement in environmental action is frequently limited to awareness campaigns, with few opportunities for youth to design, implement, and sustain impactful projects. Institutional barriers, limited funding, and lack of mentorship constrain the scale and effectiveness of youth-led initiatives. Moreover, youth perspectives are often excluded from environmental policy processes, despite their stake in long-term outcomes.
Marginalized youth, including young women, rural youth, and those from disadvantaged communities, face additional obstacles such as limited access to education, technology, and decision-making spaces. Without targeted investment in youth leadership and stewardship, opportunities to harness youth potential for climate action remain underutilized.
There is a critical need for programs that empower youth as active agents of climate action and environmental stewardship, enabling them to lead locally driven solutions while influencing broader environmental policies.
