CODESRIA’s Call for Applications: African Futures and the Futures of Childhood in Africa

The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) is currently accepting applications for its 2016 Child and Youth Institute that will be held for two (2) weeks, from 17 to 28 October 2016 to strengthen the analytic capacities of young African researchers on issues affecting children and youth in Africa and elsewhere in the world. The institute is designed as an annual interdisciplinary forum in which participants can reflect together on a specific aspect of the conditions of children and youth, especially in Africa.

The 2016 child and youth institute focuses on how African children place themselves with respect to aspirations, rights, entitlements, and imaginations in Africa’s futures.

Theme

The theme of 2016 child and youth institute is “African futures and the futures of childhood in Africa”

Objectives

  • encourage the sharing of experiences among researchers, civil society activists and policy makers from different disciplines, methodological and conceptual orientations and geographical/linguistic areas
  • promote and enhance a culture of democratic values that allows to effectively identify issues facing children and youth on the African continent
  • foster the participation of scholars and researchers in discussions and debates on the processes of child and youth development in Africa

Eligibility Criteria

  • Resource Persons: Lectures to be delivered during the session are intended to offer laureates an opportunity to advance their reflections on the theme of the Institute. Resource persons should therefore be senior scholars or researchers who have published extensively on the theme, and who have significant contributions to make to the debates on it. They will be expected to produce lecture materials which would stimulate laureates to engage in discussion and debate around their respective lectures and the general body of literature available on the theme. Once selected, resource persons must:
    • Interact with the Director of the Institute and the laureates to help the latter readjust their research questions and their methodological approaches
    • Submit a copy of their course materials for reproduction and distribution to participants no later than one week before they deliver their lectures
    • Deliver their lectures, participate in debates and comment on the research proposals and the papers of the laureates
    • Review and submit the revised version of their lecture notes or research papers for publication by CODESRIA not later than two months following their presentation at the Institute.
  • Laureates: Applicants should be PhD candidates or scholars in their early career with a proven capacity to conduct research on the theme of the Institute. Intellectuals active in the policy process and/or social movements and civil society organizations are also encouraged to apply. The number of places offered by CODESRIA at each session is limited to ten (10). Non-African scholars who are able to raise funds for their participation may also apply for a limited number of places.

EU-Eritrea: Strengthening the Capacities of Civil Society Organisations & Local Authorities

The European Union (EU) is currently accepting proposals from eligible organisations for its thematic programme “Civil Society Organisations and Local Authorities” to strengthen civil society organisations’ and local authorities’ contribution to governance and development processes.

The programme is divided into two lots:

  • LOT 1 – CSOs (EUR 950 000): To support and strengthen CSOs’ capacity to perform their roles as development actors, services providers and agents in policy processes, in coordination with the country’s relevant stakeholders, in the areas of:
    • support to children, women, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups
    • gender equality
    • education
    • health
    • food security and sustainable natural resources management
    • water and sanitation
    • culture, media and information
    • cultural and natural heritage
    • interfaith dialogue and prevention of radicalisation
    • youth empowerment;
    • economic empowerment for disadvantaged groups and populations segments out of mainstream services
    • decent work and rights at work;
    • migration and fight to trafficking and smuggling.
  • To foster CSOs’ cooperation with similar entities (eg with other Eritrean, African and European CSOs) and with LAs in-country and abroad and/or to strengthen CSOs’ cooperation with international and regional intergovernmental organisations.
  • LOT 2 – LAs (EUR 300 000): To support LAas’ capacity to perform their roles as development actors, service and welfare providers, and promoters of inclusive and sustainable growth at the local level (according to their institutional mandate) in the areas of:
    • support to children, women, people with disability and other vulnerable groups
    • gender equality
    • education
    • health
    • food security and sustainable natural resources management
    • water and sanitation
    • culture, media and information
    • cultural and natural heritage
    • interfaith dialogue and prevention of radicalisations
    • youth empowerment
    • economic empowerment for disadvantaged groups and populations segments out of mainstream services
    • decent work and rights at work
    • migration and fight to trafficking and smuggling
  • To foster LAs’ cooperation with similar entities (eg with other Eritrean, African and European LAs) and with CSOs in-country and abroad and/or to strengthen LAs’ cooperation with international and regional intergovernmental organisations.

Size of Grants

Any grant requested under this call for proposals must fall between the following minimum and maximum amounts:

  • LOT 1 – CSOs
    • minimum amount: EUR 150 000
    • maximum amount: EUR 500 000
  • LOT 2 – LAs
    • minimum amount: EUR 150 000
    • maximum amount: EUR 300 000

Eligibility Criteria

  • In order to be eligible for a grant, the lead applicant must:
    • be a legal person or an entity without legal personality
    • be non-profit-making
    • be a specific type of organisation such as: non-governmental organisation, , local authority
    • be established in a Member State of the European Union or in the State of Eritrea or in another EU partner countries, as follows:
      • developing countries that are included in the list of recipients of ODA established by the OECD/DAC including countries and territories falling within the scope of Council Decision 2013/755/EU on the association of the overseas countries and territories with the European Union (‘Overseas Association Decision’)
      • countries that are signatories to the Partnership Agreement between the members of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States of the one part, and the European Community and its Member States, of the other part, signed in Cotonou on 23 June 2000, including South Africa
      • countries eligible for the European Development Fund
      • countries eligible for Union funding under the European Neighbourhood Instrument established by Regulation (EU) No 232/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council (the ‘European Neighbourhood Instrument’) including the Russian Federation.
      • be directly responsible for the preparation and management of the action with the co-applicant(s) and affiliated entity(ies), not acting as an intermediary.
    • Potential applicants may not participate in calls for proposals or be awarded grants if they are in any of the situations

DHHS/ACF: Supporting Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention Programs

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF), agency of Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking applications from eligible entities with an aim to support community-based efforts to develop, operate, expand, enhance and coordinate initiatives, programs and activities in tribal and migrant communities to prevent child abuse and to strengthen and support families to reduce the likelihood of child abuse and neglect, consistent with the goals outlined by Title II of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA).

This legislation specifies that one percent of the available funding from Title II will be reserved to fund tribes, tribal organizations and migrant programs. The goal of the programs and activities supported by these funds is to prevent child abuse or neglect within the tribal and migrant populations.

Organizations should foster strong linkages with the State Lead Agency for the Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention Programs (CBCAP) funded by Title II of CAPTA.

Funding Information

  • The estimated total program funding is $397,640
  • It is anticipated that three grants will be funded under this announcement. The funding period will be for 5 years.

  • Grantees are strongly encouraged to implement evidence-based and evidence-informed programs and practices that reflect the unique cultural characteristics and needs of their communities.
  • The funds must also be used to support an evaluation of the programs and services funded by the grant.
  • ACF will consider funding at least one tribal organization or Indian tribe and at least one migrant organization that falls within the funding range under this funding opportunity announcement.

The Children’s Prize Foundation is currently accepting applications from individuals, teams and organizations from around the globe to submit their proposals to reduce child mortality to save lives. The Prize promote connections between donors and recipients, encouraging modern networking technology while trying to add a new technique to the landscape of global philanthropy.

Projects are evaluated on their:

UNITAID Call for Proposals: Scale-up of better TB treatment in children

United Nations UNITAID has currently announced its new Call for Proposals for the area of intervention- ‘Scale-up of better TB treatment in children’.

Through calls for proposals, UNITAID seeks new ideas that enable organizations and governments to scale up their responses to health challenges. After rigorous analysis and vetting, UNITAID funds the best proposals that offer value for money and potential for real global-health impact.

The programme may support the following works:

  • Facilitate adoption of new medicines to displace current suboptimal treatment
    • Work to incorporate the new formulations into countries’ TB strategies, supply planning, forecasting and treatment protocols; accelerate regulatory approval and registration of new products in-country, where required.
  • Expand access to better TB medicines to reach more children in need
    • Support integrated delivery approaches to reach more children with TB, for example by: leveraging active case-finding strategies; developing and piloting innovative methods of demand generation and integration of TB into other health care services for children, including private sector; developing innovative approaches or strategies to improve detection or reporting of TB in children (including application of diagnostic tools and strategies in innovative ways), with a focus on approaches that could be implemented within the next two years.

Themes

Under this call, UNITAID is soliciting proposals to address market-specific challenges, with a view to improving the health of this market on the following dimensions:

  • Demand and adoption: i.e., countries, programmes, providers, and end users rapidly introduce and adopt the most cost-effective products within their local context; and
  • Delivery: i.e., supply chain systems (including quantification, procurement, storage, and distribution) function effectively to ensure that products reach end users in a reliable and timely way.

Eligibility Criteria

The applicant(s) can be:

  • A public or private entity / institution / organization around the world; or
  • A consortium: a group of public and/or private entities / institutions / organizations with one entity / institution or organization acting as the Lead Organization (“LO”).

CODESRIA’s International Conference Addressing Psychosocial Disorders in Children and Youth in Africa

The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) is currently inviting the researchers for its programmes on Health of the Child and Youth, aiming at encouraging and developing research in the areas of health, child, and youth in Africa. For 2016, an international conference will be held on the theme: “Children and Adolescents in Africa in the midst of Psychosocial Disorders.”

With an urgent and compelling need to raise the issue of psychosocial trauma affecting children and adolescents this questioning should go beyond such wars which are exceptional situations that tend to normalize various forms of violent and lethal experiments in which children are involved.

The conference will be held from 19-21 October 2016 at Niamey, Niger.

Themes

The following are some of the themes the conference will be addressing:

  1. Trauma, armed conflicts and sexual violence against minors ;
  2. Pathological careers of children who are exposed to drug issues ;
  3. Dealing with children’s and adolescents’ psychosocial disorders by states and societies: public and private modes of enmity ;
  4. Care and support for minors suffering from mental disorders ;
  5. Cultural representations of psychosocial disorders among children and adolescents;
  6. Mental health of children seeking refuge from war ;
  7. Children and adolescents in the midst of school violence ;
  8. Children and adolescents in the midst of family violence (incest, corporal punishment, etc.).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Researchers from around the world are eligible to participate;
  • Works that adopt a multidisciplinary approach will be privileged.
