The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation is one of the largest private grantmaking Foundation in the United States. It has a worldwide presence and has been actively supporting NGOs in implementing projects on different issues and services in developing countries. The Foundation provides funding to NGOs i following areas:

  • Conservation and Sustainable Development
  • Human Rights and International Justice
  • International Peace and Security
  • Global Migration and Human Mobility
  • Population and Reproductive Health
The Foundation has an open call for proposals all through the year. So NGOs around the world are invited to contact the Foundation for support. However, organizations need to go through the grantmaking guidelines carefully before applying for any support. Paul Hamlyn Foundation

The Paul Hamlyn Foundation is an UK-based grantmaking organization supporting overseas NGOs, especially in India and the UK, and provides funding to local NGOs working with disadvataged communities, helping them access basic services. It is also one of the larger foundations in the UK. Grants are generally given to NGOs who find difficult to raise funds from other sources. It means they try to support smaller organizations.

It provides grants in two main areas, namely, education and social justice, besides arts, which only addresses the needs of artiss. NGOs can seek support for projects relating to schools and child development, though this is mostly confined to the UK. The Social Justice Programme aims to ” marginalised individuals and communities so that they become integrated. In order to apply for the funds, NGOs need to understand the thematic and geographic focus of the Foundation. NGOs can also check their eligibility at this link. Online applications are accepted once eligibility test is passed.

Energy Foundation

The Energy Foundation provides grants to organizations working on energy efficiency and renewable resources, mostly in China (the other country being United States. The grants are made in areas of power, building, transportation and climate. The Foundation accepts proposals round the year, but these need to reach at least 12 weeks prior to the board meetings, which are held thrice a year (March, June and November).
