The general objective of ‘Support for European Business in South East Asia markets –Philippine component’ is to contribute to increase and diversify exports and investment of EU business in particular SMEs to the Philippines and the ASEAN regional market.
The specific objectives are
- To strengthen the EU business sector in facilitating market access in the Philippines by advocating and engaging with the Philippine Government, the Philippine business sector and other stakeholders;
- To promote the Philippines as a high-potential trade and investment market to assure that EU companies in particular SMEs, are able to better exploit the growing opportunities in the Philippines and the Philippines as a gateway to the South East Asian regional market in accordance with their corporate core values on sustainable development and corporate social responsibility.
In the EU’s bilateral relations with the Philippines, trade and in particular market access issues play an important role. Building on the EU Trade Policy document, the Global Europe Strategy and more specifically the EU’s Market Access Strategy, the handling of market access issues in the Philippines received a new impetus through the establishment of an EU-Market Access Team (MAT) in Manila. It meets regularly since April 2008. Increasing analytical and advocacy capacities of European Business Support Agencies in the Philippines would considerably benefit the work of the MAT.
