Coalition for Peace in Africa (COPA) is a network of individual peace builders and organizations aimed at working for sustainable peace in Africa through building the capacity of stakeholders in the field of conflict management and related issues. As a network, COPA facilitates linking and sharing between practitioners and stakeholders to ensure the building of sustainable peace in Africa. Part of COPA’s vision is that it will grow a resource of African wisdom, expertise and strong voice to be able to respond effectively to the conflicts besetting different parts of the continent.
COPA is currently inviting applications for the last round of the ‘Building Capacities for Peace Training’ for the year 2011 that will be taking place from 21st November to 1st December 2011 in Nairobi, Kenya.
The 10 day training envisages bringing on board 25 practitioners working in the fields of peace building, development, humanitarian relief and human rights in the Horn, Eastern Africa and the Great Lakes regions in an effort aimed at building their capacities to intervene constructively in conflict situations. Given the rich mix of participants in previous trainings, it is expected that this will further provide a platform for exchanging practical experiences from different parts of Africa in the areas of development, conflict resolution, gender issues etc.
Furthermore, there will be sessions which will enable participants appreciate the role development interventions play in building sustainable peace or in further destabilizing already fragile areas. The role of women during conflict and reconstruction will also be addressed as well as sessions on lobbying and effective advocacy, monitoring and evaluation and post conflict reconstruction.
