The Weeramantry International Centre for Peace Education and Research (WICPER), founded by H.E. Judge C.G. Weeramantry, former Vice-President of the International Court of Justice, is organizing a week-long, regional conference for youth leaders from each of the SAARC countries – Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Topics will focus on a broad range of crosscutting themes including social media for advocacy, citizen journalism, capacity building, networking for peace-building, community empowerment and project proposal development.
WICPER invites youth leaders to submit applications for participating in the conference that is to be held during September 4-11, 2011 in Sri Lanka
Purpose
This conference is designed to bring together young leaders from SAARC countries to exchange ideas, build relationships, and develop national and regional programs focused on community development. This innovative workshop will combine conceptual themes with practical skills development to provide youth leaders with the necessary tools to promote awareness and implement change in vital areas for the entire region from poverty reduction and peace-building to climate change and cross-cultural understanding.
Eligibility
Youth Leaders (18-24) actively involved in community development projects. All disciplines/backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Application Procedures/Selection Process
Those interested are requested to send in their CV’s withj two referees, along with an essay (one page A4, Font 12, Times New Roman) setting out what they understand by ‘Trusteeship’, and how they would contribute toward the region in the long term in order to achieve sustainable development goals.
Training for Trusteeship (TFT) Workshops
The philosophical concept of ‘Trusteeship’ places a duty on every individual to do what he or she can to preserve our environmental and cultural inheritance for the benefit of current and future generations. During the workshop participants will have the opportunity to discover how regional and global partnerships can be made through networking with international organizations, and engage with leading authorities in various fields and outstanding regional and international youth-led organizations. The participants will receive a certificate at the conclusion of the workshop and are also expected to develop and implement carry out specific projects formulated by them during the workshop to be conducted on returning to their regions, institutions and communities.
