Introduction
Young people are at the forefront of climate action and social change. Across the world, youth are increasingly affected by climate change, environmental degradation, social inequality, unemployment, and weak governance systems. At the same time, they represent a powerful force for innovation, creativity, and transformative leadership. When equipped with the right skills, platforms, and resources, youth can drive scalable solutions that address both climate challenges and pressing social needs.
Climate change is not only an environmental crisis but also a social and economic one. It disproportionately impacts marginalized communities, exacerbates poverty, food insecurity, health risks, and social exclusion. Addressing these interconnected challenges requires integrated, youth-led climate and social innovations that combine environmental sustainability with social justice, inclusion, and economic opportunity.
This proposal, Youth Leadership for Climate and Social Innovation, aims to empower young leaders (aged 18–35) to design, implement, and scale innovative solutions that respond to climate change while addressing local social challenges. Through leadership development, innovation support, mentorship, and multi-stakeholder collaboration, the project will strengthen youth agency and position young people as key drivers of sustainable and inclusive development.
Problem Statement
Despite growing awareness of climate change and social challenges, youth participation in decision-making and innovation ecosystems remains limited. Many young people, particularly from low-income, rural, and climate-vulnerable communities, lack access to leadership opportunities, technical skills, funding, and institutional support. Youth-led initiatives often remain small-scale and fragmented due to weak networks, limited mentorship, and insufficient access to finance and policy spaces.
Key challenges faced by youth include:
- Limited access to leadership training and civic engagement platforms
- Inadequate skills in climate science, social innovation, and systems thinking
- Lack of financial resources and incubation support for youth-led ideas
- Weak linkages with policymakers, private sector, and research institutions
- Exclusion of marginalized youth, including young women and rural youth
Without targeted investment in youth leadership and innovation ecosystems, opportunities to harness youth-driven climate and social solutions will remain underutilized. There is an urgent need for integrated programs that build youth leadership capacities, support innovation, and create enabling environments for youth-led change.
