Southern African Scholarships

The University of Edinburgh invites two scholarships for postgraduate study in any subject provided by the University to students from Southern African countries. One of the scholarships will be available for a one year Master’s degree programme and the other scholarship for a three year PhD degree programme.

The scholarship covers the overseas rate of tuition fee and University accommodation for the duration of the postgraduate degree programme.

The scholarship will be awarded to applicants from Southern African countries which have been accepted for admission on a full-time basis for a postgraduate Master’s programme of study or PhD degree programme at the University of Edinburgh.

Applicants may apply from the following countries:

  • Angola
  • Botswana
  • The Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Lesotho
  • Malawi
  • Mozambique
  • Namibia
  • South Africa
  • Swaziland
  • United Republic of Tanzania
  • Zambia
  • Zimbabwe

Applicants should already have been offered a place at the University of Edinburgh and should have firmly accepted that offer or be intending to do so.

The scholarship will be awarded on academic merit basis. Candidates are expected to have the international equivalent of a UK first class or honour’s degree at undergraduate level.

Health Policy Action Fund Call for Proposals

Civil Society Organizations from 30 IHP+ countries are invited to submit proposal for funding of health policy work at national level. The Health Policy Action Fund has issued this call for proposals to provide grants of up to $30,000 per grantee for a period of 18 months starting April 2012.

CSO Health Coalitions and Networks working on a broad range of health policy issues at national level can apply for this opportunity.

IHP+ is currently comprised of 55 partners, of which 30 are developing countries, who have committed themselves to accelerate better health results in low and middle income countries by putting the Paris principles on aid effectiveness into practice in health.

The HPAF aims to support southern civil society organizations, networks and coalitions to become more effectively engaged in national health policy processes. Supported by the grants, recipients engage in health policy and implementation monitoring and analysis, policy dialogue with key national health stakeholders, and hold governments and aid donors accountable to work towards achieving universal and equitable access to health care and the health-related Millennium Development Goals.

This fund is now open to support health organisations, networks and coalitions for health policy work in 30 IHP+ countries, in 2012-13. The IHP+ countries are: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chad, DRC, Djibouti, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Togo, Uganda, Vietnam, and Zambia.

Call for Proposal 2012-Young Researchers Award-Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)

GBIF enables free and open access to biodiversity data online. Informatics activities of the Secretariat focus on developing a full suite of information technology infrastructure, architecture, services and tools to serve a fully functional network of participants. This is an international government-initiated and funded initiative focused on making biodiversity data available to all and anyone, for scientific research, conservation and sustainable development.

The main objective of the Young Researchers Award (YRA) is to foster innovative research and discovery in biodiversity informatics by graduate students in masters and doctorate programs at universities in countries participating in the GBIF network.

EC Call for Proposals to support Non-State Actors in Zambia

The European Commission has issued a call for proposals to support Non-State Actors in Zambia. The global objective of this Call for Proposals is strengthen civil society in Zambia as a precondition for a more equitable, open and democratic society.

The specific objective (s) of this Call for Proposals is/are:

  • NSAs contribute to human development by
    • Promoting service delivery in the areas of education, health and sustainable livelihoods.
    • Promoting corporate social responsibility
  • NSAs participate in policy dialogue in their areas of core competencies.
  • NSAs are enabled to foster effective networking and maintain collaborative relationships with government with a view to benefit populations out of mainstream services.

The overall indicative amount (subject to approval of Annual Action Programme 2012) made available under this Call for Proposals is EUR 6,000,000.

The Swedish Institute seeks Applications for the Study Scholarships from Candidates in Select Countries

The Swedish Institute is currently inviting applications for the Swedish Institute Study Scholarships.  These scholarships are meant for the highly-qualified students from select countries. There are about 120 scholarships available for award for studies in Sweden and will focus mainly on master’s level. A few scholarships are also available for the bachelor level studies.

Scholarship Provisions

The scholarship covers both the tuition fee (which is paid directly to the Swedish university/university college by the Swedish Institute) and living expenses to the amount of SEK 8,000 per month. The scholarship is only awarded for programs starting in the fall semester 2012 (August) and is granted for of one academic year, i.e. for two semesters at a time. It will be extended for programs longer than two semesters provided that the study results are satisfactory. Scholarship holders will receive a travel grant in connection with the scholarship. The travel grant is a one-time payment of SEK 10.000.

The scholarship is designed to cover living costs and study expenses for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members. The granted scholarship period cannot be altered or extended beyond the study program period nor can the scholarship be transferred to another study program at a Swedish university.

Eligible Countries

The program is open to candidates from two different categories of countries.

Category 1: Candidates with citizenship from the following countries: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Within this category around 60 scholarships will be awarded.

Category 2: Candidates with citizenship from countries on the DAC list of ODA recipients, with the following exceptions: Albania, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Russia, Serbia, Turkey and Ukraine.

Citizens from Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine can apply within the Visby Program. Citizens from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo and Serbia can apply within the program SI Scholarships for East Europe. Citizens from Turkey can apply within the Swedish-Turkish Scholarship Program.

Eligibility Criteria

The scholarships are intended for students from the target group for full time studies in Sweden. There is no age limit for scholarship holders.

Scholarships cannot be granted for students who:

  • Have already lived in Sweden for two years or more previous to the scholarship period.
  • Have a Swedish permanent residence or work permit.
  • Have previously been awarded a Swedish Institute scholarship for studies at Master’s level or for research at a Swedish university.
  • Already hold a Master’s degree from a Swedish university/university college.
  • Are currently enrolled in a study program on Bachelor’s or Master’s level at a Swedish university or university college.

Application for the Swedish Institute Study scholarship can be submitted between March 14, 2012 and March 25, 2012.

Applications invited for Chevening Scholarship Program from Young Professionals in Select African Countries to pursue PG studies in the UK

British Council is currently seeking applications for the Chevening Scholarship program from young eligible and outstanding professionals in select African countries viz. Botswana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, South Africa, South Sudan, Uganda, and Zambia who are already experienced in their chosen profession and would like to further develop their career with a postgraduate course in the UK.

The Chevening Scholarship Program is a prestigious awards scheme that funds international postgraduate students who want to study in the UK for one academic year.

Funded by the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office and administered by the British Council, the scheme operates in over 150 countries and annually provides funding for over 2,300 scholars.

Fields of Study

Economics, Finance, Banking, Law, Human rights, Public administration, Management, Project planning, Media, Political science, International relations, Diplomatic training, Environmental studies

Although applicants for other courses (as varied as counter-terrorism, religion and energy/climate change) may be considered. You are expected to show a commitment to return to your country, where you will contribute to the country’s socio-economic development using the new skills and knowledge acquired during your stay in the UK.

Eligibility

You can apply for a Chevening scholarship if:

  • You are a postgraduate student who can prove your academic success and who has already begun a career in your chosen field.
  • You have between two and five years working experience (depending on the country you are applying in), with an excellent track record illustrating your achievements and your potential to use the skills gained during your scholarship to make a difference in your country.
  • You have achieved an excellent mark for you undergraduate degree and can provide a transcript of your academic record. Specific academic requirements are available from the British Council offices in your country.
  • You are 21 years or older (there are upper age limits for specific countries so please ensure you check this during your applications process).
  • You are a resident in your country when you apply and provide your birth certificate (with translation).
  • You must have good English language skills (most UK Higher Education institutions require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 for admission into postgraduate courses).

Freedom House seeks Small Grant Proposals under the Justice as a Right in Southern Africa Program

Freedom House Southern Africa (FHSA) under its Justice as a Right in Southern Africa Program is seeking small grants proposals from civil society organizations in Zambia, Swaziland, Lesotho, Botswana, Malawi and South Africa.

FHSA is looking for proposals from CSOs that are capable of complementing the work that FHSA is currently undertaking for promotion of judicial independence, respect for the rule of law and protection of human rights. Although the Program currently works mostly at a regional level, this call seeks proposals for activities to be undertaken at a national level in the following countries: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland and Zambia.

Focus Areas

Proposals should focus on areas and activities that can include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Research into topics related to the objectives of this call for proposals;
  • Training for judges, lawyers, other members of the legal profession or civil society;
  • Monitoring, documentation and reporting of human rights abuses;
  • Promotion of the use of strategic or public interest litigation;
  • Advocacy and public education campaigns on topics linked to judicial independence, the rule of law and protection of human rights;
  • Promotion of relevant policy reforms;
  • Support to civil society participation in constitutional review processes;
  • Community-based civic education or consultations;
  • Conferences or seminars on topics related to the objectives of this call for proposals.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to apply for this call for proposals, applicants must:

  • Be nationals of Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, Swaziland or Zambia;
  • Be a legally registered NGOs (this category includes law societies or bar associations);
  • Not-for-profit entity;
  • Have a track record of working on rule of law and human rights Programs;
  • Have adequate financial management systems and human resources in place;
  • Not be bankrupt;
  • Not have been convicted or currently the subject of any legal proceedings related to the management of funds;
  • Not be a political party or a politically affiliated organization.

Funding Size and Project Duration

Projects to be funded under this call for proposals should have a very specific focus and be time bound.

The maximum amount an organization may request under this call for proposals is US$35 000 and the minimum is US$20 000. Co-financing of projects by the applicant organization is encouraged;

The minimum duration of projects to be proposed should be three months and the maximum duration should be nine months.

Nordic Climate Facility’s Third Call for Proposals

The Nordic Climate Facility has issued the third call for proposals on “innovative low-cost climate solutions with a focus on local business development in eligible developing countries.” The Nordic Climate Facility aims to promote the transfer of technology, know-how and innovative ideas between the Nordic countries and low-income countries facing climate change challenges. The main goal is to bolster the capabilities of low-income countries to mitigate and adapt to climate change challenges and implement sustainable development measures which will lead to the reduction of poverty.

The Nordic Development Fund (NDF) has provided a total of EUR 12 million under the first two calls for proposals under the NCF. The third call for proposals launched in October 2011 has been granted

EUR 6 million by NDF for the theme Innovative low-cost climate solutions with a focus on local

business development.

Financing can be granted to partnerships between Nordic institutions, organisations, companies, or authorities, and qualified local partners in eligible low-income countries. The application should be submitted by the Nordic entity.

The eligible low-income countries for the NCF programme are:

Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe

Asia: Bangladesh, Cambodia, Kyrgyz Republic, Lao PDR, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam

Latin America: Bolivia, Honduras, Nicaragua

Applications shall be submitted in two phases: Concept Phase and Final Phase.
