CUD Scholarship Opportunity to pursue International Courses and Trainings in Belgium

The CUD (Cutting-edge International Trainings and Courses for Development) is currently seeking applications for the 2012-2013 Scholarship Program aimed at offering support to candidates from select developing countries to pursue international courses and trainings such as the European Masters in Microfinance, Master in Public Health – Guidance Health and Development, Master in International Economics and Development, Master in Development, Environment and Societies, Master in Public Health Methodology etc and courses like Internship in Management Systems Health Services – economics and resource management / planning in Belgium-based institutions.

Eligible Countries

Only candidates from developing countries are eligible to apply for the program. Countries that have been listed are:

Algeria, Bangladesh, Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Cameroon, China, Colombia, Ivory Coast, Cuba, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Guinea, Haïti, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Nicaragua, Niger, Uganda, Peru, Philippines, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, El Salvador, Senegal, Suriname, South Africa, Tanzania, Palestinian territories, Vietnam, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Eligibility Requirements

Age-limit for participating in the program is 40 years for the courses and 45 years for trainings. Eligible candidates will be those holding a graduate degree comparable to Belgian University graduate degree (“license”). After completion of the program, selected candidates should return back to their country and pursue work in the field in which they have undergone the course or training.

Language Requirements

Some of these courses and trainings are in French and candidates should be familiar with the language before applying for them. Nevertheless, selected candidates also need to learn French while participating in the program.

During the selection process, following criteria will be taken into account:

  • academic curriculum
  •  benefit of previous scholarships
  • Professional experience
  • Membership of a partner institution
  • commitment of the candidate to development activities
  • Nationality
  • Equality of sexes
  • Perspectives of future reinstatement

IREX invites Community Leaders from Select Countries to attend the Community Solutions Program in the U.S.

IREX is currently inviting community leaders from select countries around the world to participate in the Community Solutions Program to be hosted by US based organizations. Community Solutions Program is targeted at community leaders working in Transparency & Accountability, Tolerance/Conflict Resolution, Environmental Issues, and Women’s Issues. During this professional development program, these leaders will get an opportunity to will participate in: a four month US fellowship with a local nonprofit organization or government agency; structured virtual learning and networking via the Online Community Leadership Institute; and, the design and implementation of follow-on projects in their home countries.

Program Activities

Four-month U.S. Fellowship:  Community Solutions leaders work in community based, non-profit organizations or government offices across the U.S. where they work in partnership with American counterparts to address local issues.

Community Leadership Institute (CLI): Community Solutions leaders develop leadership and organizational management skills through online courses and in-person training that complements their community placements.

Follow-on Projects: Community Solutions leaders develop follow-on community projects in partnership with their U.S. hosts.  Follow-on projects will be completed after leaders return to their home countries.

ELIGIBILITY

Technical Eligibility Requirements

  • Community Solutions Program is open to participants from select eligible countries irrespective of race, color, religion, national origin, or gender. Persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply. Competition for the Community Solutions Program is merit-based and open to community leaders, ages 25-38 at the time of application, who meet the following criteria:
  • from a participating country (U.S. citizens, permanent residents of the U.S., and individuals who have applied for U.S. permanent residency in the past three years are not eligible for this program)
  • currently living and working in his/her home country (Individuals participating in academic, training or research programs in the United States at the time of application and individuals residing or working outside their home countries at the time of application are not eligible for this program)
  • currently working on a community project or initiative in his/her home country; and, has at least 2 years of professional experience in this capacity at the time of application
  • able to begin the program in the United States in 2012, and is committed to returning to his/her home country after completion of the program
  • able to receive a U.S. J-1 visa (Individuals who have participated in an exchange visitor program sponsored or funded by the U.S. Government who have not fulfilled their two-year home residency requirement by the time of application are not eligible for this program)
  • proficient in spoken and written English at the time of application

MEASURE PRH Small Grants Opportunity to support Research in Family Planning and Reproductive Health in USAID FP Countries

The MEASURE Evaluation Population & Reproductive Health Associate Award (PRH) has issued a request seeking proposals from eligible candidates in select countries for the third round of small grants program aimed at increasing the evidence base in family planning (FP).

Small grants of the program are aimed at supporting primary and secondary data analysis particularly national program or policy evaluation – and data use activities based on research findings. Recipients of these small grants are expected to produce a publishable manuscript and complete a data use activity.

Program Objective

The objective of MEASURE Evaluation PRH Associate Award is to ensure optimal demand and analysis of family planning and reproductive health (FP/RH) data, and the appropriate use of such information to measure performance and to inform FP/RH interventions and policies. MEASURE Evaluation PRH expands on prior work to strengthen the capacity of FP/RH decision makers to use information to inform efforts to scale up high-quality and sustainable FP/RH programs.

Research Topics & Methods 

  • Priority will be given to proposals that address the suggested research topics and/or methods:
  • Reaching underserved populations (e.g. addressing FP needs of youth and adolescents; the poor; displaced populations; etc.)
  • Exploring strategies to reduce poverty and inequality through targeted FP service delivery mechanisms
  • Integrated FP services (e.g. postpartum FP; FP as a component of postabortion care; FP integrated with immunization services; etc.)
  • Healthy timing and spacing of pregnancies tools, approaches, and practices
  • Addressing gender in FP, specifically, the effectiveness of gendered-focused interventions on FP health outcomes
  • Understanding provider and FP user behavior
  • Evaluating FP programs or policies (e.g. community-based distribution, contraceptive security, long-acting & permanent methods, behavior change communication, etc.)
  • Evaluating population-health-environment programs
  • Utilizing innovative rapid data collection methods
  • Assessing e-Health methodologies as they relate to FP
  • Mapping or spatial analysis of FP data

Eligibility

Candidates eligible to apply for PRH small grants include country or regional academic institutions or centers, non-profit and for-profit research organizations, parastatals, and research-focused NGOs. All candidates must be from USAID’s FP priority countries. Eligible candidates must be seeking to build their research and/or data use capacity.

Grant Size

The base amount for a small grant is US$6000, which is intended to cover basic research expenses for a nine-month timeline. However, the total amount of the grant will be based on proposed budgets and is expected to be higher, so as to cover the costs of the planned data use activities.

Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Guatemala, Haiti, India (Uttar Pradesh State), Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Yemen, Zambia.

Submission of Proposal

Applicants first need to submit a concept paper. Short-listed candidates will then be requested to submit a detailed research proposal.

Sida’s International Training Programme on Efficient Energy Use and Planning

The Swedish International Development Agency’s (Sida) International Training Programme on Efficient Energy Use and Planning is intended for decision makers, planners, trainers, managers and specialists qualified to participate in reform processes of strategic importance for the energy sector in the country. The candidate should hold a position with mandate to initiate and implement changes in the field of energy efficiency. Candidates representing government organizations, private companies or NGOs at national, regional or local level are welcome to apply.

The training will be held in three parts:

  • Part 1: May/June 2012 in Africa/Asia
  • Part 2: 10 September – 3 October, 2012 in Sweden
  • Part 3: February / March 2013 in Asia/Africa

The overall objective of the programme is to contribute to capacity building and change processes in the participants´ organizations in order to achieve sustainable and strategic energy efficiency in the participating countries taking poor people´s needs and rights into consideration.

The countries invited with first priority to this programme are: Botswana, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, China, India and Vietnam. However the programme is also open for other countries with potential and ambition for energy efficiency planning.

Sida International Training Programme on Child Rights, Classroom and School Management

The Swedish International Development Agency’s (Sida) International Training Programme on Child Rights, Classroom and School Management organized in cooperation with Lund University will be held in two parts: Part 1: September 17 – October 11, 2012 in Sweden and Part 2: 10 days in March, 2013 in another participating country.

From a development perspective, the overall objective of Child Rights, Classroom and School Management ITP programme is: “to improve participating countries’ capacity to offer and ensure everyone’s right to relevant and quality education, an education that is safe and secure, inclusive, student-centred, democratic and problem-solving and that creates opportunities for all, regardless of background, to participate in community life as active citizens.” The main objective is change processes that will contribute to the realization of the intention of the Child Rights Convention in policy as well as in practice.

The training programme invites persons working within the educational sector at local, intermediate and central level to apply. Additionally, the programme will be open to professional NGO staff, working in the field of Education and Human Rights, based in developing countries, as one member of the team. A necessary prerequisite is a university or a teacher training degree. Work experience of at least five years is also required. Participants should also be approximately 30-55 years of age and fluent in English. The teams should consist of a mix of men and women and be balanced regarding participants’ ages. Teams consisting of three applicants of same gender will not be considered. Applications should be endorsed by the applicant’s organisation.

Invited countries:

Africa: Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia

Asia: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Vietnam.

STARS Foundation’s Impact Awards 2012: $100,000 of grant funding to NGOs

The STARS Foundation is now open to accepting applications for the STARS Impact Awards 2012, which offer $100,000 of unrestricted funding in addition to providing tailored consultancy support and media training, content and access to NGOs across Africa, Middle East, Asia and the Pacific regions.

The STARS Impact Awards aim to identify and support local NGOs that achieve excellence in the provision of services to disadvantaged children and that demonstrate effective management practices.

There are six Impact Awards in total: three Awards for Africa-Middle East and three for Asia-Pacific, across the categories of Health, Education and Protection.

Each Impact Award provides a package of support comprising:

  • US$100,000 of unrestricted funding – Giving recipient organisations the flexibility to respond more effectively to the challenges they face and to the needs of the children they serve
  • Tailored consultancy support – Offering recipient organisations access to training or skills and helping them to maximise the benefits of their Award
  • Media training, content and access – Providing recipient organisations with the tools and opportunities to use the Award to enhance their profile

This year, the STARS Foundation has partnered with the Ashmore Foundation to increase the number of Awards it intends to offer to 14.

Eligible organizations from 19 countries can submit proposals for funding. These countries have been selected on the basis of their estimated under-five mortality rate (U5MR) which is a critical indicator of the well-being of children. STARS targets countries with the highest under-five mortality rates according to the UNICEF report and rankings of 2009. The list of countries is available at this link.

ActionAid Denmark invites development practitioners from select countries to register as Inspirators

ActionAid initiated Inspirators are the cross national placements of development practitioners between 3 to 9 months.

Inspirators are development practitioners with considerable hands on experiences from developing or newly industrialised countries. Inspirators are typically placed with one of our local partner organisations for a shorter period of time to provide capacity building input for concrete activities. Inspirators are volunteers driven by solidarity and commitment to development issues and an interest to gain knowledge and international work experience.

How the Inspirators system works

Inspirators are selected from a database called the Inspirator Roster. The Inspirator Roster consists of screened and approved Inspirator candidates. Approved Inspirator candidates will be placed when and if their qualifications match an approved job description. Furthermore, the receiving organisation must approve the Inspirator candidate. It is the need alone of organisations that ActionAid cooperates with, which decides when and where an Inspirator can be placed. Interested candidates can apply online at theActionAid website. All applicants who register, will go through a validation process in order to be listed in the Inspirator Roster. It is important to point out that enrolment in the Roster does not guarantee placement. Approved candidates are listed as active for a period of 1 year. After this candidates receive an email asking whether they wish to be active in the Roster the following year.

Who can apply?

Currently, ActionAid Denmark only accepts applications from candidates residing within the following countries:

  • Africa:  Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa & Angola
  • Middle East: Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon & Occupied Territory Palestine
  • Asia: Nepal, India & Pakistan
  • Latin America: Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Ecuador, Brazil, Argentina, Dominican Republic.
  • Europe: Denmark

Residents in other countries than listed above, will not be accepted for the Roster

Qualifications

ActionAid is looking for dedicated development practitioners, who have:

  • At least 5 years of paid or voluntary work experience
  • At least 3 years of paid or voluntary work experience within a specific and relevant subject area
  • Paid or voluntary work experience from developing or newly industrialised countries
  • Voluntary work experience
  • Strong sense of solidarity and volunteerism
  • Facilitation and motivational skills
  • Ability to transfer knowledge
  • Personal drive and motivation to become an Inspirator

Other Provisions

  • Inspirators are volunteers and will therefore not receive a formal salary. Inspirators will however have their expenses covered while abroad. An Inspirator can thus expect to receive the following:
  • A return ticket from their home country to the country of service
  • A lump sum to cover expenses related to expatriating
  • A daily living allowance to cover modest living costs and private transportation in the country of service
  • A “Home Country Subsidy” to partly compensate for some of the expenditures in the home country
  • Free modest accommodation
  • A relocation allowance to allow the Inspirator to purchase basic furniture and kitchen utensils.
  • Insurance coverage
  • Inspirators should be aware that all allowances and subsidies are subjected to local tax.
  • All inspirators accepted for posting are required to participate in an online introduction course to ActionAid International and to the role of an Inspirator prior to the commencement of their placement  or arrival in the country of service.

USAID Funding Opportunity APS: Zambia Economic Resilience Program for Improved Food Security (ZERS)

U.S. Agency for International Development Mission in Zambia (USAID/Zambia) is currently seeking applications for implementation of Zambia Economic Resilience Program for Improved Food Security (ZERS). The purpose of this APS is to disseminate information to prospective applicants so that they may develop and submit applications for USAID funding.

USAID will conduct a two-stage process for this APS. Stage One will consist of concept papers from prospective Applicants. Stage Two is through an invitation process to submit Full Applications from applicants with the most highly-rated concept papers. Concept papers are to be received by the closing date and time specified above in order to be considered for the respective round of review.

Description of the Proposed Program

The Zambia Economic Resilience for Improved Food Security Program (ZERS) will enhance coping skills, build assets, and increase rural incomes for 50,000 vulnerable and poor households in Eastern Province, thereby significantly contributing to Millennium Development Goal 1 of halving the proportion of Zambians living in extreme poverty and suffering from hunger by 2015.

ZERS will be a core activity in implementing U.S. President Obama’s Feed the Future (FTF) global hunger and food security initiative in Zambia. ZERS will contribute to FTF’s overarching goal to sustainably reduce global hunger and poverty by tackling their root causes and employing proven strategies for achieving large scale and lasting impact.

ZERS will aim primarily to increase economic resilience by improving food security and nutrition in vulnerable households through implementing interventions that reduce the number of hunger months, improve nutrition and health practices, and increase the value of household assets and the ability of households to productively use those assets. The geographic focus is in Eastern Province, with the possibility of scaling up successful interventions to other provinces.

ZERS will implement innovative strategies and approaches to enable vulnerable and poor rural households, the “vulnerable yet viable,” as well as the very poor, to improve food security through strengthened economic resilience. Special attention will be given to enabling poor and very poor women to meet food needs, and ultimately to participate in expanding opportunities as producers, service providers and entrepreneurs. The ZERS activity will contribute to the achievement of the USG Zambia Feed the Future strategy.

Estimated Funding Size

USAID may make multiple awards for a total of up to approximately $24,000,000 over 5 years to implement ZERS, where approximately $20 million is for economic resilience and nutrition activities, and approximately $4 million is for HIV/AIDS related components (PEPFAR abstinence/be faithful activities).
