UK Department for International Development: LEGEND Challenge Fund of up to £750,000 to Improve Land Rights

The Land Portal Foundation is seeking applications for its LEGEND Challenge Fund to support the development and testing of innovative approaches and partnerships for strengthening land governance, with a specific focus on piloting approaches to responsible land-related investments.

The Fund has two concurrent “windows” through which applicants can apply for grants:

  • Window 1: Responsible Land-Based Agricultural Investments
  • Window 2: Open Innovation

Aims

  • To identify and support projects to strengthen land governance which will ultimately contribute to: inclusive growth; increased incomes for the poor, especially women; reduced environmental damage; and reduced conflict potential.
  • To identify and support projects interested in testing innovative approaches to ensure that agricultural investors act responsibly and assist in developing partnerships with rural communities, so as to contribute toward the outcome of:
    • Securing and protecting land/property rights for poor women, men, communities and responsible businesses, and improving responsible private sector investment in agricultural land in Africa.

Eligible Countries

Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zambia and Sierra Leone.

Funding available

The total funding requested through the Challenge Fund must be within the following limits:

  • Lower limit: £100,000
  • Upper limit: £750,000

Eligibility Criteria

  • Geographic focus: Applicants are welcome to propose to work in more than one target country (mentioned above).
  • Partners: Projects must be implemented through a partnership consisting of:
    • Lead organisation: Must be not-for-profit legal entity.
    • Not-for-profit certification in country or countries of registration to be provided.
    • Partner organization: must include at least one for-profit legal entity:
      • Business registration certificate in country or countries of registration to be provided.
      • Applicants are welcome to include additional partners (including more business partners, central or local government agencies, research institutions or other civil society organisations). If the project involves multiple countries, a business partner is required in each country of implementation (which may or may not be the same entity).
    • Business contribution: the Business Partner must fund their own costs for participating in the project
      • Financial contribution can be quantified and represented on the Challenge Fund Budget Summary Template.
      • Applicants are welcome to provide additional funding for added impact, though this is not mandatory.
    • Partnership arrangements: confirming partners’ interest and role
      • Application must include “Letter of Interest” to explain and support the partnership arrangements. This letter must contain:
        • Signatures from appropriate representatives of each participating organisation;
        • Project summary, including: project title, country (or countries of implementation), geographic location in country (Map or GPS coordinates, with clear description, and/or physical address), expected results, total grant amount requested and grant duration;
        • Summary of roles and responsibilities of each participating organisation, commitment from all partners to transparency, and learning and dissemination of lessons.
        • Identification of the contribution (in cash or in-kind) of each business partner to the project. Contributions from other participating organisations are welcome but not mandatory.

Southern Africa Prosperity Fund 2016/17 to Promote Economic Reform & Development

The British High Commission Pretoria has announced a Prosperity Fund over the next 5 years to promote the economic reform and development needed for growth in partner countries. The Funding priorities will include improving the business climate, competitiveness and operation of markets, energy and financial sector reform, and increasing the ability of partner countries to tackle corruption.

The Fund will primarily be focused on ODA eligible middle income countries, contributing to poverty reduction and complementing DFID’s work in poorer countries.

Funding Objectives

  • Power: Proposals to facilitate increased electricity generation and improved distribution are welcomed.
  • Infrastructure: Proposals to unlock trade and growth potential currently constrained by poor transport and ICT infrastructure are welcomed.
  • Cities: Proposals to support sustainable and efficient urban planning are welcomed.
  • Skills: Project proposals should support the development of local skills and capacity in the areas of power, infrastructure and cities.
  • Transparency: Proposals promoting transparency among business and the public sector are also invited.

Angola, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia.

Funding available

Successful project bids will deliver high-impact, value-for-money activities for around £100k or more.

The Prosperity Fund accepts project proposals from civil society, governments, think-tanks, commercial organizations and other UK government departments.

Call for Proposals 2016: EDCTP Grants of up to € 3 million to Clinical Research in Sub Saharan Africa

The European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) is currently accepting proposals from Sub Saharan Africa for EDCTP Regional Networks Program. The purpose of this Call is to provide funding for actions that aim to support regional networking in sub-Saharan Africa and with Europe in order to build and strengthen regional, national, institutional and individual capacities to conduct clinical trials in line with the International Conference on Harmonization guidelines for Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP).

Objectives

The specific objectives of the networks should include:

  • To strengthen collaboration and optimise the use of resources and infrastructures within the network. This could include the establishment of shared facilities such as clinical laboratories or data management centres, and setting rules and guidelines for sharing and accessing these.
  • To offer training and mentorship aimed at promoting professional development and scientific leadership in clinical trials. This would require the establishment of a formal training programme and platform for exchange of expertise in key skills such as design of clinical trials, monitoring, data management, pharmacokinetics, laboratory techniques, biostatistics, clinical epidemiology, pharmacovigilance, as well as financial management, administration, and quality assurance.
  • To strengthen South-South and North-South collaborations between researchers and institutions with a specific focus on supporting less established institutions in building capacity for conducting high quality clinical research.
  • To encourage and promote networking and dialogue between researchers, communities and policy makers to maximise the impact of clinical research in Africa.

  • Neglected infectious diseases (NIDs) that include dengue/severe dengue; rabies; human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness); Leishmaniases; cysticercosis/taeniasis; dracunculiasis (guinea-worm disease); echinococcosise; foodborne trematodiases; lymphatic filariasis; onchocerciasis (river blindness); schistosomiasis; soil-transmitted helminthiases; Buruli ulcer; leprosy (Hansen disease); trachoma; yaws; diarrhoeal infections; lower respiratory infections; as well as emerging infectious diseases of particular relevance for Africa, such as Ebola.

Grants available

The call budget is € 12,000,000 and the expected number of grants available is 4.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The network must comprise a minimum of six legal entities from at least three different sub-Saharan African countries (mentioned above) and a minimum of two legal entities from two different European Countries (mentioned above).
  • The requested EDCTP contribution per network must not exceed € 3.0 million.
  • The maximum project duration must be 36 months.

  • Be a legal national from a eligible country (mentioned above) and be working as a librarian or information science professional in that country.
  • Be employed in a library or information center.
  • Have a qualifying degree in library or information science. The qualifying degree may vary depending upon country of origin, but should be the general library or information science degree recognized in the country. Normally a PhD is not considered a qualifying degree, because the
  • Fellowship program is targeted for early career librarians.
  • Have obtained the qualifying degree between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2015.
  • Have at least three years, but no more than eight years, of library or information science experience. For the 2017 program, applicants must have library or information science experience that begins no earlier than January 1, 2008 and no later than January 1, 2013.
  • Read and speak English proficiently.

New Zealand Development Scholarships for Candidates from Selected Developing Countries!

Applicants are invited for New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) funded by the New Zealand Government’s international aid and development programme. They are managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) give candidates from selected developing countries an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills through study in specific subject areas which will assist in the development of their home country. Awardees are required to return to their home country for at least two years after the completion of their scholarship to apply these new skills and knowledge in government, civil society or private business organisations.

NZDS are for postgraduate study in New Zealand and are available to candidates from specific Latin American and African countries, some Chinese provinces, and from Nepal, Timor-Leste and Mongolia. NZDS are also available for undergraduate study to candidates from Timor Leste.

SEED Foundation is seeking applications from organisations for its 2016 grant projects to support pilot projects in favor of an innovative agricultural development.

The mission of Seed Foundation is to support agricultural and rural development in Africa to improve food security and living conditions of the most vulnerable population.

Focus Areas

SEED Foundation’s team will pay particular attention to the following areas:

  • The relationship between staffing and total project budget: Priority will be given to projects where staffing SEED Foundation is decisive in the budget.
  • The number of beneficiaries: Priority is given to small groups of beneficiaries.
  • The steps of the sector concerned by the project: Priority will be given to projects affecting several steps in the chain.

    • Have the ability to continue the process without the support of the carrier to end of the project.
  • Eligibility Project
    • Be subject to the creation of agricultural activities and / or sustainable agribusiness that create added value at the local level and to improve access to healthy food;
    • Take place in Africa in an eligible country;
    • Being innovative ;
    • Determine their pilot phase with a start-up Phase 1 of this year at the time of filing;

2016 SIDA Training Programme on ‘Strategic Environmental Assessment’ for African Professionals

The Swedish International Development Agency’s (SIDA) International Training Programme (ITP) is organizing the training on ‘Strategic Environmental Assessment’.  The Part 1 of this training will be held from 31 October – 18 November, 2016 in  Göteborg and Stockholm, Sweden and the Part 2  training in May-June, 2017 in one of the participating countries.

Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) will serve as a tool for analysis of environmental impacts and the integration of environmental considerations in strategic planning and decision making. The programme aims at contributing to sustainable development, by supporting capacity building in Strategic Environmental Assessment and integrating environment in strategic planning, decision making and implementation initiated or promoted by the participants.

Additionally, this particular SEA programme has an energy focus, specifically targetting participants from organisations and agencies within the energy sector.

The programme offers support for your organisation to strengthen, adapt and maintain capacity to implement SEA. Participants will take part of the latest developments in SEA, supported by Swedish experts and resource persons. They will also develop a network of colleagues from Sweden and other countries, and enhance knowledge about new working methods.

The programme is organised by Niras Natura AB in collaboration with the Centre for Environment and Sustainability (GMV) at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology.

Programme Objectives

  • The objective of the programme is to strengthen SEA capacity in the participants’ organisations. The programme will support each participant in initiating and developing an “SEA project” that will strengthen the use of SEA in planning processes that she/he is involved in.
  • In the long term, the programme goal is to increase the integration of environmental and sustainability considerations into planning and decision-making processes in the participants’ countries. The sustainability perspective on SEA addresses the interlinking of social, ecological and economic aspects, including aspects of poverty alleviation and the rights of the poor.

Eligible Countries

This training programme has a regional focus. The following countries are invited to nominate candidates:

Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia.

What participants will gain?

  • Increased knowledge of different approaches to environmental assessments of policies, plans and programmes (SEA)
  • Increased knowledge of methods and tools for integrating SEA with strategic planning and decision making
  • Increased knowledge of international experiences of development regulations, guidance and procedures for implementing SEA in practice
  • Increased understanding of the importance of  transparency, access to information and public participation in planning
  • Improved skills as a “change agent” in initiating and implementing organisational change
  • Strengthened international, regional and national networks in the field of SEA

Eligibility Criteria (Target Group)

  • Participants may be nominated by organisations and agencies within the energy sector that work actively with plans, policies and programmes at national or regional levels, and in different sectors for which SEA is required or may be applied. These may be government agencies, ministries, non-governmental organisations or private enterprises involved with energy in any relevant field, such as production, distribution, consumption, regulation, planning, policy development, or civil society engagement.
  • The programme will seek diversity in the sectors represented. Priority will be given to organisations that will benefit from increased capacity in SEA and strategic energy development. Participants will be selected from organisations with demonstrated intent and possibilities to support the design and implementation of an SEAP within the organisation.

Course Contents

The training programme content is organised in four integrated thematic modules:

  • Module 1, Introduction to SEA: the concept of and rationale for SEA,  and methods and tools for conducting SEA.
  • Module 2, International and Swedish regulatory systems and experiences of SEA within the energy sector: concept and approach, the role of regulatory frameworks, and effective environmental integration.
  • Module 3, Good governance and implementation of SEA in practice: the institutional, political, social and economic aspects of enabling the integration of  environmental considerations in strategic planning.
  • Module 4, Organisational change: organisational change theory and tools and skills for initiating, leading and managing an SEA project within an organisation.

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is an international programme under which member governments offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commonwealth countries.

The CSFP was established at the first Commonwealth education conference in 1959 and is reviewed by education ministers at their triennial meetings. The CSFP is the only scholarship scheme in the world to receive such high-level recognition.

Millennium Challenge Account-Zambia: Innovation Grant Program for Private Sector!

Millennium Challenge Account-Zambia (MCA-Zambia) is pleased to announce the second call for concept notes for its Innovation Grant program (IGP) which is a competitive pro-poor grant program to engage the private sector in innovative partnership opportunities in water supply, sanitation and drainage (Solid waste management).

MCA-Zambia has been established under the laws of Zambia as a company limited by guarantee, designated by the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) as the Accountable Entity to implement the Lusaka Water Supply, Sanitation and Drainage Project. This has been funded by the United States of America, acting through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).

Objectives

  • To improve water use, sanitation and hygiene
  • To reduce blockage of sewer/drainage systems
  • To expand opportunities for entrepreneurship and income generation activities related to WATSAN and drainage
  • To ensure access for women and vulnerable groups to project benefits

Grant Information

  • Total Grant Portfolio: $6.25 million
  • Small Grants: Minimum $30,000 to $100,000
  • Large Grants: $100,001 to maximum grant size $1.5 million

Eligibility Criteria

  • For-profit companies, non-government organizations, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, universities, research institutions, and foundations
  • Zambian or non-Zambian, provided that non-Zambian organizations comply with Zambian regulations for performing business or related activities in the country.
  • Small organizations seeking grants are encouraged to affiliate with larger organizations that have the capacity to formulate a work plan and manage grant funding

Demo Environment Fund by SIDA: Reducing Poverty by developing Partnerships for Planning & Demonstration Projects in 11 Countries

Applications are currently invited for Demo Environment Fund, a challenge fund financed by The Swedish Agency for Development Cooperation (Sida) and managed by The Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth. Demo Environment is a programme that aims to promote sustainability and reduce poverty by developing partnerships and knowledge about new and innovative technical solutions.

The programme represents an opportunity for a range of private and public sector organizations to explore partnerships, transfer knowledge and share the risk of investing in new technology that can help to reduce poverty and environmental impact, and to increase climate resilience. It also gives organisations and entrepreneurs opportunities to demonstrate and adapt their products and expertise in new markets. Applications will be considered for

  1. Demonstartion grants
  2. Planning grants

About the Programme

The programme will run from 2015–2018. It operates as a challenge fund and awards grants on a competitive basis. Two kinds of grants are available: planning grants and grants for demonstration projects. You may apply for one or both types of grant consecutively. Calls for applications are published on the website of the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth. The programme’s emphasis is on new, sustainable, cleantech solutions in the areas of water, sanitation, ecosystem services, energy and urban development. This includes products, systems, processes and services that have clear environmental advantages over existing or alternative solutions.

Eligible Countries

Demo Environment is able to fund projects in 11 of Sida’s partner countries:

  1. Africa: Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia
  2. Asia: Bangladesh, Cambodia
  3. Western Balkans: Bosnia and Hercegovina, Serbia
  4. Eastern Europe: Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine

Grants & duration

  • The maximum Planning Grant is SEK 350,000. Budgets are to be submitted in Swedish crowns (SEK). It must be possible to implement the activity within a maximum of one year.
  • Projects demonstrating technology that is new to either the country or context for the project, but has been tested and sold in another country, can be awarded a grant for a Demonstration Project ranging from SEK 500,000 to 1,800,000.
