Kurt Schork Memorial Fund: Seeking Journalists for International Journalism Awards 2016

The Kurt Schork Memorial Fund (KSMF) is currently inviting applicants for its 2016 awards in international journalism, that seeks to illuminate the human condition through courageous reporting of conflict, corruption, human rights transgressions and other fundamental issues of the day.

KSMF invites freelance journalists everywhere to enter the 15th annual edition of the awards, established in 2002 to honour American freelance journalist Kurt Schork, who was killed in 2000 while on assignment for Reuters in Sierra Leone.

Award Categories

  • A Local Reporter award that recognises the often over-looked work of journalists in developing nations or countries in transition who write about events in their homeland.
  • A Freelance journalists who travel to the world’s conflict zones, usually at great personal risk, to witness and report the impact and consequences of events.

Submission Criteria

  • Submitted articles must have been published between June 1, 2015 and May 31, 2016.
  • Accepted media: any print-based medium, such as newspapers and magazines, or established online publications. Blogs, personal websites and social media pages or channels are not accepted.
  • Articles can encompass war reporting, human rights issues, cross-border troubles, corruption or other controversial matters impacting on people’s lives. Judges will be looking for professionalism, high journalistic standards, and evidence of dedication and courage in obtaining the story.

Applications are open for Mama Cash 2016 Grants that support ambitious feminist and women’s rights organisations and initiatives led by and for women, girls and trans people.

The Mama Cash was the first international women’s fund in the world and is still alive and kicking. For 2016, Mama Cash expects to approve grants to approximately 20 new groups, in addition to the planned renewal grants to current grantee-partners.

Focus Areas

Mama Cash supports groups and initiatives that:

  • Work from a feminist and/or women’s rights perspective
  • Are self-led by the women, girls and/or trans people they serve
  • Have the promotion of women’s, girls’ and/or trans people’s human rights as their primary mission, and not just as the focus of part of their programmes

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants include groups, organisations, networks and other women’s funds. They are led by and work for sexual and ethnic minorities, adolescent girls, trans people, indigenous women, low-income women, single mothers, women with disabilities, migrant women, sex workers, rural women and women workers in both formal and informal sectors.
  • Applicants must be based outside of the United States or Canada.
  • Grant seeking organization must have annual operating budgets below EUR200,000.
  • Applicant organization or initiatives must have their primary mission to promote the women’s, girls’ and/or trans people’s human rights.
  • Individuals or businesses are not eligible to apply for Mama Cash Grants.
  • Applicants must work from a feminist and/or women’s rights perspective; self-led by women, girls and/or trans people they serve.
  • Applicants must push for structural and fundamental change and be connected to other organizations in women’s rights and/or other social justice movements.

The Public Affairs Section (PAS) of U.S. Embassy is currently accepting applications for the 2016 Spring Round of the Democracy Commission Small Grants Program to support the development of Kyrgyzstan’s democratic institutions and civil society by competitively awarding small grants to Kyrgyz nonprofit, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and associations, nonprofit civil society organizations (CSOs), and independent local media organizations.

Project Themes (Not Limited)

  • Promotion of a robust civil society that promotes human and civil rights of all population segments

  • U.S. Embassy Democracy Commission welcomes applications from non-governmental organizations, academic or research institutions and other organizations in Kyrgyzstan.
  • Higher priority will be given to proposals that include concrete project activities detailed and supported by a reasonable work plan, and demonstrate creativity and innovation in a particular field.

European Union: Promotion & Protection of Human Rights of Roma, Egyptians & Other Vulnerable Groups

The European Union is currently accepting proposals from eligible organisations for “Promotion and protection of human rights of Roma, Egyptians and other vulnerable groups” in Montenegro. The global objective of this call for proposals is to ensure durable and sustainable solutions for protecting fundamental human rights of vulnerable groups in compliance with international standards.

Priority issues of this Call for Proposals revolve around four pillars which would enable the target population to have improved access to their rights: employment, education, health care and social inclusion.

Size of Grants

Any grant requested under this call for proposals must fall between EUR 950,000.00 and EUR 1,000.000.00.

Eligibility Criteria

  • In order to be eligible for a grant, the lead applicant must:
    • be a legal person
    • be non-profit-making
    • be a specific type of organisation such as: non-governmental organisation, international organisation
    • be established in a Member State of the European Union or Montenegro
    • have at least 3 years of experience in implementing and supporting projects facilitating the integration of RE in Eastern Europe and/or the Balkans
  • Potential applicants may not participate in calls for proposals or be awarded grants if they are in any of the situations
  • The lead applicant may act individually or with co-applicant(s).
  • Co-applicants participate in designing and implementing the action, and the costs they incur are eligible in the same way as those incurred by the lead applicant.

Department of Justice: Enhancing Collaborative Model to Combat Human Trafficking

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) is seeking applications for funding under a joint solicitation to support the development and enhancement of multidisciplinary human trafficking task forces within the United States  that implements victim-centered, collaborative, and sustainable approaches to:

  • Identify victims of all types of human trafficking within specific geographic areas.
  • Investigate and prosecute sex trafficking and labor trafficking cases at the local, state, tribal, and federal levels.
  • Address the individualized needs of victims through the provision of a comprehensive array of quality services.

Objectives

The human trafficking task force will:

  • establish and sustain effective leadership and a structure that will engage the necessary resources to support the successful identification of victims of all forms of human trafficking; service delivery; and investigation and prosecution of trafficking perpetrators.
  • make data-driven decisions based on a shared understanding of the prevalence, scope, and nature of human trafficking within the target geographic area.
  • identify victims of all types of human trafficking through the use of coordinated training, public awareness and outreach efforts, and trauma-informed screening and interview techniques
  • conduct proactive investigations of sex trafficking and labor trafficking with the goal of successful prosecution of human trafficking cases at the state or federal level.
  • ensure that a comprehensive array of services are readily available to meet the individualized needs of all victims of human trafficking, including foreign nationals and U.S. citizens, of all ages and sexes.

Funding Categories

  • Development of Human Trafficking Task Forces
  • Enhancement of Established Human Trafficking Task Forces

Funding Information

  • Development of Human Trafficking Task Forces: Each cooperative agreement (one for law enforcement and one for service provider within each task force) will be between $600,000 and $900,000. Combined federal funds to each task force may not exceed $1.5 million.
  • Enhancement of Established Human Trafficking Task Forces: Each cooperative agreement (one for law enforcement and one for service providers) will be between $600,000 and $900,000. Federal funds to each task force will not exceed $1.5 million.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Grants under this program may be awarded to states, units of local government, federally recognized Indian tribal governments (as determined by the Secretary of the Interior), and nonprofit, nongovernmental organizations (including tribal nonprofits).
  • For the purposes of this program, a unit of local government is any city, county, township, town, borough, parish, village, or other general purpose political subdivision of a state, territory, or federally recognized Indian tribal government.
  • Eligible applicants are law enforcement agencies and victim service providers located and operating within the community, jurisdiction, or geographic area of the human trafficking task force specified within the application.
  • This funding announcement requires two separate but coordinated applications from each human trafficking task force seeking funding: one application from a lead state, local, or tribal law enforcement agency and one application from a lead victim service organization.
  • The two applications must be developed in close collaboration with each other, and must be submitted as a pair, with each applicant naming the other as the primary partner.
  • Task forces applying for funding must submit the pair of applications under one of two Purpose Areas within this solicitation: Purpose Area 1- for the development of human trafficking task forces, or Purpose Area 2- for the enhancement of established human trafficking task forces.
  • Agencies and organizations that are members of task forces that received an award of federal funding through the OVC/BJA Enhanced Collaborative Model in FY 2010 through FY 2014 are not eligible to apply under Purpose Area 1.
  • Task forces funded in FY 2015 are not eligible to apply for FY 2016 funds, under either Purpose Area. Purpose Area 2 applicants must submit a human trafficking task force Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in order to be considered eligible for funding.

The overall objective of the CSF programme is to contribute to anchoring democratic values and structures, human rights, social inclusion and the rule of law, there by supporting the EU integration process.

Objectives

  • To increase the effectiveness of the Serbian CSOs in undertaking initiatives
  • To enhance regional cooperation and dialogue Serbia and Kosovo
  • To strengthen the role of civil society organisations in the process of negotiations with the EU and policy monitoring

Size of Grants

Any grant requested unedr this call for proposals must fall between the following minimum and maximum amounts:

  • Minimum amount: EUR 300,000
  • Maximum amount: EUR 500,000

Eligibility Criteria

  • In order to be eligible for a grant, the lead applicant must:
    • be a legal person
    • be non-profit-making
    • be civil society organisation
    • be established in a Member State of the European Union
    • be directly responsible for the preparation and management of the action with the co-applicant(s) and affiliated entity(ies), not acting as an intermediary.
    • in case the applicant is a CSO not established in Serbia, it must act with at least one co-applicant that is established in Serbia.
  • Co-applicants participate in designing and implementing the action, and the costs they incur are eligible in the same way as those incurred by the lead applicant.

  • Work in collaboration with federal, state, and local law enforcement, local service providers, and community- and faith-based organizations to ensure trafficking victims are identified and referred for appropriate services.
  • Conduct training and public awareness activities for professionals and community members in order to improve their knowledge of human trafficking and their ability to identify and respond to victims.
  • Conduct data collection and evaluation activities to determine if the program is meeting stated goals and objectives.

Funding Information: OVC estimates that it will make up to 10 awards of up to $750,000 each for a 36-month project period.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Grants under this program may be awarded to states, units of local government, federally recognized Indian tribal governments (as determined by the Secretary of the Interior), and nonprofit, nongovernmental organizations (including tribal nonprofits).
  • For the purposes of this program, a unit of local government is any city, county, township, town, borough, parish, village, or other general purpose political subdivision of a state, territory, or federally recognized Indian tribal government.
  • Organizations with a demonstrated history of providing victim assistance, social services, legal services, shelter, or mental health services for victims of human trafficking are eligible to apply.
  • OVC may elect to make awards for applications submitted under this solicitation in future fiscal years, dependent on the merit of the applications and the availability of appropriations.
  • OVC welcomes applications that involve two or more entities that will carry out the funded federal award activities; however, one eligible entity must be the applicant and the others must be proposed as sub recipients.
  • The applicant must be the entity with primary responsibility for administering the funding and managing the entire project. Only one application per lead applicant will be considered; however, sub recipients may be part of multiple proposals.
  • Current OVC trafficking victim services grantees who received funding from the OVC FY 2015 Comprehensive Services for Victims of Human Trafficking solicitation or the OVC FY 2015 Enhanced Collaborative Model to Combat Human Trafficking solicitation are not eligible to apply for funding under this solicitation.
  • Nonprofit organizations that hold money in offshore accounts for the purpose of avoiding paying the tax described in 26 U.S.C. 511(a) are not eligible to apply.

International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is currently inviting applications from woman journalists around the world for its 2016/17 Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship.

The goal of the Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship is to provide women journalists with a transformative experience by offering them opportunities to complete research and coursework at leading academic institutions and build reporting skills through internships at major U.S.-based media outlets.

Benefits

  • A fixed monthly stipend will be provided to cover housing, meals, and ground transportation during the fellowship.
  • Round-trip economy airfare will be purchased from the fellow’s place of residence to Washington, D.C., and from Washington, D.C., to the fellowship city.
  • The fellow will receive health insurance during the program.
  • The fellowship does not include a salary.
  • For fellows residing outside of the United States, the fellowship also covers the costs of applying for and obtaining a U.S. visa.
  • The fellow will be fully responsible for any additional incidental expenses and other costs.
