Call for Proposals: GBIF Capacity Enhancement Support Program 2016

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is accepting proposals for its 2016 Capacity Enhancement Support Programme, which seeks to enhance the long-term capacity of GBIF Participants through collaborative projects. GBIF mission is to provide free and open access to biodiversity data.

The programme aims to address specific capacity needs identified by Participants by facilitating capacity transfer and collaboration at the regional and global levels. Participants for capacity enhancement projects based on combinations of the following types of action:

  • Mentoring activities
  • Regional training support
  • GBIF advocacy actions
  • Documentation
  • Needs Assessment

Funding Information

The maximum total funding request is fifteen thousand euros (€15,000) per project.

Eligible Countries

Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Benin, Chile, Colombian, Costa Rica, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Guinea, Iceland, Ireland, Kenya, Korea, Madagascar, Mauritania, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The 2016 call is only open to GBIF Participants (mentioned above).
  • All project concept notes and proposals must be jointly prepared by all the partners involved in the project, with one Participant acting as the main contact point in each proposal.
  • Only concept notes that have been endorsed by the Head of Delegation or Node Manager of a GBIF Participant and in which all partners have confirmed their participation will be considered eligible for evaluation.

Romanian State to foreign citizens through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently inviting applications for the 85 scholarships program for under- and post-graduate studies in Romania.

Scholarship Covers

  • Free-of-charge tuition,
  • Free-of-charge accommodation

    • 65 EURO per month, for the under-graduate students.
    • 75 EURO per month, for post-graduate students (master degrees and specialization).

Eligibility Criteria

How to Apply

  • Application files submitted by post or directly to the MFA or to the MECS.
  • Applications files should contain documents in English or French language.
  • If the application files contain documents in other foreign languages than English or French, they must be accompanied by authorized translations in one of the following languages: Romanian, English or French. Generally, Romanian universities may require that all enrolment documents should be accompanied by authorized copies and authorized translations in Romanian.

Global Bridges:Healthcare Alliance for Tobacco Dependence Treatment in collaboration with Pfizer Independent Grants for Learning and Change (IGLC) is currently inviting applications focused on treating tobacco dependence. IGLC’s goal is to increase the number of people who stop smoking by improving the frequency and effectiveness of treatment interventions (e.g., counseling and/or evidence-based pharmacotherapy) provided by healthcare professionals.

Grants available

The total available budget related to this RFP is two million U.S.dollars ($2,000,000), including indirect costs. The maximum allowed overhead rate is 28%, and the maximum dollar amounts delineated above include overhead costs. All amounts listed are in U.S. dollars (USD).

Eligibility Criteria

  • Credentialed medical, dental, nursing, allied health, public health or pharmacy professional schools, universities, healthcare institutions, hospitals, for-profit health systems, professional associations, member societies, state agencies involved with tobacco control, and other not-for-profit entities working in the WHO European Region may apply (mentioned above).
  • Project work must be focused on capacity building or Article 14 implementation in the WHO European Region. Collaborations are encouraged, provided that the conditions above are met.
  • Applicants who have accepted any funds from the tobacco industry in the past five years are not eligible to apply.

Applications open for GBIF Young Researchers Award 2015 for graduates. The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) award aims to foster innovative research and discovery in biodiversity informatics by graduate students.

Two awards of €4,000 each to one master’s student and one doctoral student will be awarded.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Graduate students must be enrolled in a masters or doctoral programme at a university to be eligible to submit a research proposal to the GBIF Young Researcher Award programme.
  • Students must apply through and be nominated by a Head of Delegation (HoD) of a GBIF Participant country namely Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Benin, Burkina Faso, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Iceland, Ireland, Kenya, Korea, Madagascar, Mauritania, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa , Spain   , Sweden, Tanzania, Uganda, United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay. Application Procedure

Proposal Format:

  • Project Summary (200 words)
  • Project Description (maximum 5 pages, 12 point font) that describes
  • Budget (1 page), itemized and justified. NOTE: budgetary items are restricted to academic fees, essential equipment, supplies (e.g. hardware, software) and travel; salary support is not permitted.
  • Curriculum vitae of the student applicant including full contact information at the home institution.
  • Supporting documents

A maximum of two proposals may be submitted to the GBIF Secretariat by the Head of Delegation of any GBIF Voting or Associate Participant country.

Heads of Delegations must ensure that their submissions include the elements according to the format. The proposals should be mailed to the email address given on the website.

The UNAOC Fellowship Program for Individuals from Europe and North America to visit MENA region

The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) Fellowship Program is open for individuals from Europe and North America (EUNA). The EUNA individuals can apply for the fellowship program and be selected to visit four different countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) during December 2014. The UNAOC fellowship program provides emerging leaders with opportunities to get more familiar with the diverse realities and cultural environments of other cultures.

Total 15 emerging leaders from the EUNA region will be selected to participate in the exposure visit to three/four countries in the MENA region during the first half of December 2014. This is an opportunity for the participants to deepen their understanding of the realities, perceptions, challenges and achievements of key sectors of life in the MENA region. The exposure visits will allow fellows to engage with prominent personalities and institutions in areas such as government, international organizations, civil society, media, social impact entrepreneurs, religion and culture.

Submit Communications on Women Human Rights Violations to UN Women

The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, UN Women, Commission on the Status of Women accepts communications in the form of complaints, appeals or petitions on the Status of Women. The communication must contain information relating to alleged violations of human rights that affect the status of women in any country in the world. Such communications are part of the Commission’s annual program or work. They help the Commission identify emerging trends and patterns of injustice and discriminatory practices against women works as guideline in policy formulation and development of strategies for the promotion of gender equality.

How does it work?

  1. Communications with detailed information on the allegations of human rights violations affecting the Status of Women are received by UN Women Human Rights Sections till 1 August 2014
  2. The UN Women Secretary-General sends communications to the Governments concerned and these governments are invited to submit replies with 12-weeks deadline.
  3. Compilation of confidential report by UN Women, containing the summaries of communications and replies from the concerned Governments (if any)
  4. A working group on communications on the status of women meets in closed meetings for about five working days. During these meetings, the group considers the communications and replies. The working group prepares a report that identifies trends and patterns of reliably-attested injustice and discriminatory practices against women. The report indicates the categories in which communications are most frequently submitted to the Commission.
  5. The confidential list of communications and replies, and the working group’s report are made ready for distribution in the annual session.
  6. In second week of the Annual Session, the Commission on the Status of Women takes up the item ‘Communications concerning the Status of Women’ in closed meeting(s).
  7. Recommendations can be made to the Economic and Social Council on the action to be taken on emerging trends and patterns of discrimination against women.
  8. The Commission takes note of the report of the Working Group and includes in the annual report that submits to the Economic and Social Council.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Submissions can be made by any individual, non-governmental organization, group or network from anywhere in the world.
  • The communications must contain accurate and detailed information relating to women’s rights in any sector in any country in the world.

The Journalists and Writers Foundation (JWF) invites grant applications for Peace Projects, the grant program that supports NGO projects promoting peaceful coexistence through dialogue and reconciliation; fostering pluralism, good governance, freedom of belief; advancing social and economic development and environmental responsibility; upholding respect for human rights, and gender equality and empowerment and other broad range of disciplines.

The JWF is a non-governmental organization that promotes peaceful coexistence through dialogue and understanding at global, regional and local levels.

Participants from around the globe are invited take part in Marlegno Prefabricated Wooden’s Buildings Designing the Future Competition organized by Marlegno Prefabricated Wooden Buildings, in collaboration with the Association of Architects of Bergamo. The mission of organizing this competition is to obtain different architectural solutions, starting from a few basic elements/modules.

Prizes:

  • First place 5.600,00 euro
  • Second place 2.800,00 euro
  • Third place 1.400,00 euro

Note: The first 50 projects will be exhibited at Marlegno exhibition hall until 31 October 31, 2014.

The Ramsar Wetland Conservation Grant Prize worth US$10,000 for All

The Ramsar Convention Secretariat is accepting nominations from around the globe for Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards of US$10,000. The Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards were established in 1996 to recognize and honour the achievements of individuals, organizations and governments around the world for the conservation and wise use of wetlands.

The award aims to provide the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.

Categories:

  1. The Ramsar Convention Award for Wetland Wise Use
  2. The Ramsar Convention Award for Wetland Innovation
  3. The Ramsar Convention Award for Young Wetland Champions

Submission Requirements:

  • The form must be accompanied by a document of up to 2,500 words, providing the necessary background, explaining how the nomination corresponds to the objectives and criteria of the Award, and providing an assessment of the results achieved.
  • Nominations must be accompanied by letters of recommendation from two independent individuals (not including the nominator) who are not related to the nominee, and do not work in the same organization, who can assess the nominee’s contributions and can be contacted by the evaluation panel.
  • The nomination will be assessed on the basis of the nomination form, the additional information provided and the letters of reference.
  • Nominations must be accompanied by at least one high resolution photograph of the nominee (person or team) in electronic form (minimum size of 1920×1080 pixels) with photo credits and permission for use by the Ramsar Secretariat at its discretion, including when announcing the Ramsar Award winners.
  • All winners must be ready to provide at least 20 high-resolution images illustrating their activities and achievements, with captions, photo credits and permission for use by the Ramsar Secretariat at its discretion and by DANONE-Evian for Award publicity material in different media.
  • Limited additional information such as images, short videos or links to web resources may also be provided, preferably in electronic form, to illustrate the nomination.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Individuals and groups of all nations are invited to nominate individuals, institutions (including government institutions and non-governmental organizations and community groups), or private companies, of any nation.
  • Nominees must be alive at the time of nomination. Awards will not be given posthumously.
  • Self-nominations is not be accepted.
  • Nominations of current members of the Ramsar Standing Committee, members and invited experts of Ramsar’s Scientific and Technical Review Panel, and Ramsar Secretariat staff members will not be accepted.

The University of Southern California is accepting nominations for the $200,000 John and Alice Tyler Prize 2014. Individuals or entities in different fields are encouraged to make nominations of living individuals or public or private institutions anywhere in the world who have made demonstrated achievements in environmental science, policy, energy and health conferring great benefit upon humanity.

Prize: $200,000 Cash (Joint winners share the cash prize.)

The Prize is awarded for

  • Ecological or an environmental condition – protection, maintenance, improvement or understanding – anywhere in the world.
  • Sources of energy – known or new – discovery, further development, improvement, or understanding.
  • Medical discoveries or achievements with significant benefit in environmental aspects of human health.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nominee can be living individual or public or private institutions in any nation.
  • Nominee’s work must fit to one of the above mentioned fields.
  • Nominations can be made by – any individuals or entity active in fields such as biology, oceanography, geology, medicine, public health, chemistry, and physics; engineers in fields such as civil, environmental, petroleum and chemical engineering, and social scientists in fields such as geography, political science, economics and the law; and universities, research institutions and their members.
  • Self nominations are not considered for the award.

Complete nomination includes- nominee’s curriculum vitae or resume, one page statement of accomplishments and supporting materials (articles, publications or other exemplary materials for which the award is proposed), three or more letters of reference signed by the supporter and emailed directly to the Tyler Prize office, and names, addresses and emails of 3 to 5 additional references.

Nomination form must be submitted electronically via email by the deadline.
