The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) is currently inviting applicants from ACU member universities for its Early Career Academic Grants 2016.

Applications will be strengthened by the applicant providing evidence of the submission/acceptance of a paper or poster, or other communication with the conference organisers.

Grants Information

Grants can be used to cover travel and visa costs, conference fees, accommodation, and subsistence.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be employed in an academic role by an ACU member institution (mentioned above).
  • Applications are open to university staff who are less than ten years from the start of their employment in an academic role.
  • Academic staff who have recently returned to work after a career break can also be considered: applicants to whom this criteria applies should make this clear in their application.

Capital Magnet Fund: Serving Low-income Families and Communities across America

The Community Development Financial Institute (CDFI), U.S. Department of Treasury is seeking applications from organisations for Capital Magnet Fund to spur investment in affordable housing and related economic development efforts that serve low-income families and low-income communities across America.

The CDFI Fund was established by the Riegle Community Development and Regulatory Improvement Act of 1994, as a bipartisan initiative.

Through the Capital Magnet Fund, the CDFI Fund provides competitively awarded grants to CDFIs and qualified non-profit housing organizations. These awards can be used to finance affordable housing activities, as well as related economic development activities and community service facilities.

Organizations that receive Capital Magnet Fund awards are required to produce housing and community development investments at least ten times the size of the award amount, generating a multiplier effect that means that more low-income people and low-income communities nationwide will have housing options within their financial reach.

Objectives

  • To increase economic opportunity
  • To promote community development investments for underserved populations and in distressed communities in the United States.
  • To promote economic revitalization and community development through investment in and assistance to community development financial institutions (CDFIs).

Eligibility Criteria

Capital Magnet Fund Applicants must be:

  • A certified CDFI, or
  • A non-profit organization operating with a principal purpose of developing or managing affordable housing solutions
  • All Applicants (regardless of entity type) must demonstrate that they have been in existence as a legally formed entity for at least three years prior to the funding round application deadline.

Grants available

UNICEF will consider applications for funding of approximately up to US$100,000.

Eligibility Criteria

  • UNICEF is looking to provide investment-style funding to early-stage tech startups. Only entities that fulfill these mandatory requirements will be eligible:
    • A private company/institution registered in a UNICEF programme country (mentioned above).
    • Working on open source technology solutions (or willing to be open source) under the following licenses:  Software: BSD, AGPL, LGPL and Content and designs: Creative Commons CC-BY-SA or CC-SA
  • Projects funded need to increase the ability of children to access information and to increase opportunity and choice. Specifically, projects should align with one of UNICEF Innovation’s three portfolio areas:
    • products for youth under 25 to address a range of needs including learning and youth participation
    • real-time information for decision making and governance
    • Infrastructure to increase access to services and information, including connectivity, power, finance, sensors and transport.

New Zealand Development Scholarships for Candidates from Selected Developing Countries!

Applicants are invited for New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) funded by the New Zealand Government’s international aid and development programme. They are managed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

New Zealand Development Scholarships (NZDS) give candidates from selected developing countries an opportunity to gain knowledge and skills through study in specific subject areas which will assist in the development of their home country. Awardees are required to return to their home country for at least two years after the completion of their scholarship to apply these new skills and knowledge in government, civil society or private business organisations.

NZDS are for postgraduate study in New Zealand and are available to candidates from specific Latin American and African countries, some Chinese provinces, and from Nepal, Timor-Leste and Mongolia. NZDS are also available for undergraduate study to candidates from Timor Leste.

  • have been living in this country for at least the last two years (unless you are a member of the diplomatic corps or a dependent of a member of the diplomatic corps).
  • must confirm that he/she is not currently serving in the military.
  • want to study in New Zealand or in the Pacific and applicant from Kiribati, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu or Vanuatu.
  • want to study at a level that is listed as available for his/her country for the scholarship that he/she is applying for.

The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is an international programme under which member governments offer scholarships and fellowships to citizens of other Commonwealth countries.

The CSFP was established at the first Commonwealth education conference in 1959 and is reviewed by education ministers at their triennial meetings. The CSFP is the only scholarship scheme in the world to receive such high-level recognition.

Peace Revolution is currently inviting applications for its Global Peace on the Move (GPM) Caribbean – Jamaica. The fellowship offers a 14 days intensive training program providing participants with deeper insight in the relationship between inner peace and sustainable world peace and enhancing their ability to create peace within their family, professional and social environment.

Participants will learn how meditation can help them achieve inner peace in a 14 days retreat. Romanian State to foreign citizens through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently inviting applications for the 85 scholarships program for under- and post-graduate studies in Romania.

Scholarship Covers

  • Free-of-charge tuition,
  • Free-of-charge accommodation

    • 65 EURO per month, for the under-graduate students.
    • 75 EURO per month, for post-graduate students (master degrees and specialization).

Applications are Now Open for Commonwealth Foundation Grants of Up to £30,000 for Sustainable Development in Commonwealth Countries

The Commonwealth Foundation awards annual grants for sustainable development projects that contribute to effective, responsive and accountable governance with civil society participation. The grants are open to civil society organisations (CSOs) working in Commonwealth Foundation eligible member countries. (List mentioned below).

The Commonwealth Foundation’s mission is to develop the capacity of civil society to act together and learn from each other to engage with the institutions that shape people’s lives, as we work towards a more effective, responsive and accountable governance with civil society participation.

In addition to awarding grants to civil society organizations (CSOs), the grants programme will broker knowledge and ideas. It will support innovation, share replicable and sustainable models, and promote good practices across the participatory governance sector.

Grants Available & Duration

  • Up to £30,000 per year
  • Multi-year funding available (up to three years)

Grants programme objectives

The grants programme has three objectives:

  1. To deliver an efficient and effective programme which is responsive to the development needs of CSOs across the Commonwealth.
  2. To complement the effectiveness of the Foundation’s projects by providing grants to CSOs beyond those supported through the programme work.
  3. To generate knowledge and understanding of participatory governance and its benefits in promoting effective, responsible and accountable governance within the Commonwealth by supporting models of good practice.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) is currently inviting applications for the fourth round of funding to support renewable energy projects in developing countries.

Thematic Areas

  • IRENA recommends projects based on:
    • technical merit
    • commercial viability
    • socio-economic and environmental benefits
  • To be shortlisted for further consideration, projects must be:
    • transformative
    • replicable / scalable
    • innovative
  • Projects must also:
    • Improve energy access
    • address energy security
  • Strategic considerations on projects selected include:
    • geographical spread
    • diversity of technologies
    • alignment with government priorities

Eligibility Criteria

  • Projects should be submitted by Members of IRENA, Signatories of the Statute, or States in Accession which are developing countries included in the “DAC List of ODA Recipients” from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Preference will be given to project proposals submitted by IRENA Members.
  • Projects should deploy renewable energy as defined in the Statute of IRENA, including bioenergy, geothermal energy, hydropower, ocean energy, solar energy, and wind energy.

Funding

ADFD funding is available as follows:

  • The total concessional loans committed per annual project selection cycle is approximately USD 50 million.
  • The concessional loan value for each project ranges from a minimum of USD 5 million to a maximum of USD 15 million.
  • The loan amount for each project covers up to 50 percent of the estimated total project cost.
  • Loan rates vary between 1 percent and 2 percent per annum, with duration of 20 years, including a grace period of 5 years. See website for details.
  • The project must demonstrate economic feasibility.
  • Loans are intended to cover as many recipients and regions as possible per application cycle.
  • There are no limits to the number of project proposals presented by each country, but applicant governments are advised to prioritise their proposals.

How to Apply

  • Prospective applicants must register to receive notification alerts about opening dates and deadlines for funding cycles.
  • When new funding cycle opens, the project coordinator can start the application process as follows:
    • Registration
    • Executive Project Summary application form
  • If the Executive Project Summary is shortlisted, the applicant is called upon to submit a Full Project Proposal.
  • All Applications must be submitted in English.

UNESCO/Israel (MASHAV) Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme 2016 for African & Caribbean Countries

UNESCO/Israel (MASHAV) is currently inviting  applications for its Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme 2016  to promote human resource capacities in the developing countries through intensive training and to enhance international understanding and friendship among peoples of the world and the people of Israel. The Government of Israel is placing at the disposal of UNESCO a number of fellowships for the benefit of certain Member States (especially the least developed countries) within the framework of the UNESCO Fellowship Programme.

Beneficiaries of these fellowships will be given the opportunity of participating in a variety of training courses in Israel, conducted under the sponsorship of the MASHAV, Israel’s Agency for International Development Cooperation.

Eligible Countries

Africa: Botswana, Cameroon, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, United Rep. of Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Caribbean Countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Suriname.

Benefits

UNESCO will cover

  • International travel expenses (at the most economical airfare) within the framework of the 2014-2015 Fellowships Programme.
  • One-time special allowance amounting to US$100.

MASHAV (Israel) will cover

  • Registration and tuition frees.
  • Accommodation (Room and Board).
  • Health insurance and basic medical care (This does not include dental care, glasses, and chronic illnesses).

Eligibility criteria

  • High-level educational staff, at the regional or national level, dealing with the target population, school principals, counselors, supervisors, lecturers at teacher training institutions, and researchers in relevant fields.
  • Be proficient in reading and writing in the language of instruction; (if the language of instruction is not the mother tongue, a certificate of language proficiency must be provided).
  • Be not more than 50 years of age.
