The Ramsar Wetland Conservation Grant Prize worth US$10,000 for All

The Ramsar Convention Secretariat is accepting nominations from around the globe for Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards of US$10,000. The Ramsar Wetland Conservation Awards were established in 1996 to recognize and honour the achievements of individuals, organizations and governments around the world for the conservation and wise use of wetlands.

The award aims to provide the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.

Categories:

  1. The Ramsar Convention Award for Wetland Wise Use
  2. The Ramsar Convention Award for Wetland Innovation
  3. The Ramsar Convention Award for Young Wetland Champions

Submission Requirements:

  • The form must be accompanied by a document of up to 2,500 words, providing the necessary background, explaining how the nomination corresponds to the objectives and criteria of the Award, and providing an assessment of the results achieved.
  • Nominations must be accompanied by letters of recommendation from two independent individuals (not including the nominator) who are not related to the nominee, and do not work in the same organization, who can assess the nominee’s contributions and can be contacted by the evaluation panel.
  • The nomination will be assessed on the basis of the nomination form, the additional information provided and the letters of reference.
  • Nominations must be accompanied by at least one high resolution photograph of the nominee (person or team) in electronic form (minimum size of 1920×1080 pixels) with photo credits and permission for use by the Ramsar Secretariat at its discretion, including when announcing the Ramsar Award winners.
  • All winners must be ready to provide at least 20 high-resolution images illustrating their activities and achievements, with captions, photo credits and permission for use by the Ramsar Secretariat at its discretion and by DANONE-Evian for Award publicity material in different media.
  • Limited additional information such as images, short videos or links to web resources may also be provided, preferably in electronic form, to illustrate the nomination.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Individuals and groups of all nations are invited to nominate individuals, institutions (including government institutions and non-governmental organizations and community groups), or private companies, of any nation.
  • Nominees must be alive at the time of nomination. Awards will not be given posthumously.
  • Self-nominations is not be accepted.
  • Nominations of current members of the Ramsar Standing Committee, members and invited experts of Ramsar’s Scientific and Technical Review Panel, and Ramsar Secretariat staff members will not be accepted.

The John and Alice Tyler Grant Prize worth $200,000 on Environment

The University of Southern California is accepting nominations for the $200,000 John and Alice Tyler Prize 2014. Individuals or entities in different fields are encouraged to make nominations of living individuals or public or private institutions anywhere in the world who have made demonstrated achievements in environmental science, policy, energy and health conferring great benefit upon humanity.

Prize: $200,000 Cash (Joint winners share the cash prize.)

The Prize is awarded for

  • Ecological or an environmental condition – protection, maintenance, improvement or understanding – anywhere in the world.
  • Sources of energy – known or new – discovery, further development, improvement, or understanding.
  • Medical discoveries or achievements with significant benefit in environmental aspects of human health.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Nominee can be living individual or public or private institutions in any nation.
  • Nominee’s work must fit to one of the above mentioned fields.
  • Nominations can be made by – any individuals or entity active in fields such as biology, oceanography, geology, medicine, public health, chemistry, and physics; engineers in fields such as civil, environmental, petroleum and chemical engineering, and social scientists in fields such as geography, political science, economics and the law; and universities, research institutions and their members.
  • Self nominations are not considered for the award.

Complete nomination includes- nominee’s curriculum vitae or resume, one page statement of accomplishments and supporting materials (articles, publications or other exemplary materials for which the award is proposed), three or more letters of reference signed by the supporter and emailed directly to the Tyler Prize office, and names, addresses and emails of 3 to 5 additional references.

Japan International Award 2014 worth $15,000 for Young Agricultural Researchers in Developing Countries

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) of Japan, the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Council (AFFRC), in support of the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS), is accepting applications from young agricultural researchers in the developing countries for Japan International Award 2014. The recommendation should be made by a research institute. The primary objective of the award program is to o increase motivation among young researchers contributing to research and development in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and related industries in developing countries.

The US$5,000 award each will be provided to maximum three young researchers who demonstrate outstanding performance in research and development, and outstanding research achievements that will lead to future technological innovation. The grant award ceremony will be held on November 2014 in Japan.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidate must be a non-Japanese researcher belonging to a non-Japanese research institute or a non-Japanese university. Candidate must be maximum 40 years old as of 1 January 2014, and must have demonstrated outstanding performance in research and development in agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related industries in developing countries.
  • Past applicants can also re-apply if they haven’t received the award in the past.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated outstanding achievements in research and development that will lead to future technological innovation for a developing country.
  • Candidates must commit to attend the commendation ceremony and deliver a lecture if selected as the winner.

Note: Application must be prepared according to the ‘Instructions in the Preparation of  Application Forms’ and submitted by the recommending institute via post and must reach by the deadline.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) of India and TWAS are seeking applications for Postgraduate Fellowship Program in the field of Agricultural Sciences. The mission of this program is to recognize, support and promote excellence in scientific research in the developing world.

Eligibility criteria:

Applicants for these fellowships must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a maximum age of 35 years on 31 December 2014.
  • Be nationals of a developing country (other than India).
  • Must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in India or any developed country.
  • Hold a Master’s degree in science and technology.
  • Be regularly employed in their home country and hold a research assignment there.
  • Be accepted at a CSIR laboratory/institution and provide an official acceptance letter from the host institution
  • Provide evidence of proficiency in English.
  • For Sandwich Fellowships, applicants must be registered PhD students in their home country and provide the “Registration and No Objection Certificate” from the home university.
  • For Full-time Fellowships, applicants must be willing to register at a university in India within the first year, if agreed to by CSIR.

The Toyota Environmental Activities Grant Program is accepting applications for overseas project grant and domestic project grant.

  • Overseas project – targets the activities in overseas, conducted by groups based in Japan or foreign groups collaborate with Japanese groups. Applications can be made for maximum 7 million Yen to conduct project up to two years (starting from January 2015).
  • Domestic project– targets community-based activities in Japan. Grant applications can be made for up to 3 million Yen to implement the project for up to two years (starting from January 2015)

Researcher Links Initiative of the British Council Calls for Workshop Proposals

The British Council is calling Leading Researchers to respond to the call for workshop proposals under the Researcher Links initiative. The researchers should propose themes for workshop focusing on building links for future collaboration and enhancing the researchers’ career opportunities.

Objectives

  1. Contribute to capacity building of early career researchers
  2. Establish new research links or significantly develop existing links, with the potential for longer term sustainability
  3. Support international development-relevant research (not a requirement for workships held in Russia and Qatar)

Between 15 and 20 researchers from each partner countries can take part in each workshop. The workshops will be 3 to 5 days long led by the two coordinators- one from the UK and one from the partner country.

  • Applications must be made on a bilateral basis between institutions in the UK and a partner country and must be led by two Leading Researchers.
  • The participants of the workshops must be early-career researchers and must also be based in either the UK or one of the partner countries.
  • Proposed research should have direct international development relevance. It should contribute to the economic development and welfare of a country.

  • Employees of National Geographic Society, and its subsidiaries and affiliates, and their immediate family members or persons living in the same households of such employees, whether or not related are not eligible.
  • Photographs must be in digital format. Only online entries will be eligible. No print or film submissions will be accepted. The photograph need not be taken with a digital camera; scans of negatives, transparencies or photographic prints are acceptable.
  • All digital files must be 20 megabytes or smaller, must be in JPEG or .jpg format, and must be at least 1,600 pixels wide (if a horizontal image) or 1,600 pixels tall (if a vertical image).
  • Photographs must have been taken within two (2) years before the date of entry and may not previously have won an award in the National Geographic International Photography Contest, the National Geographic Photography Contest or any National Geographic Traveler photo contest.
  • The photograph, in its entirety, must be a single work of original material taken by the Contest entrant. Copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity should not be infringed and there should be no other party who has any right, title, claim or interest in the photograph.
  • The caption must be complete and accurate, sufficient to convey the circumstances in which the photograph was taken.
  • Watermarks are not acceptable.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in cooperation with the World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) is accepting applications from scientists, researchers or policymakers who are in the early or middle stages of careers in Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago in Latin america and the Caribbean and in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam in Asia for the FAS Global Cocoa Borlaug Fellowships.

  2. Plant propagation methods
  3. Diseases – plant pathology and control methods, particularly for witches’ broom and frosty pod
  4. Soil fertility and plant nutrition

Targeted Areas for Asia

  1. Cocoa genetics and breeding
  2. Plant propagation methods
  3. Diseases – plant pathology, control methods – particularly for vascular streak dieback and black pod
  4. Pests – entomology, control methods – particularly for cocoa pod borer and mirids

The fellows will work with a mentor at a U.S. university, research center or government agency, usually for 6-12 weeks. They may also attend the annual World Food Prize Symposium, held each October in Des Moines, Iowa.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be the citizens of an eligible country, fluent in English.
  • Applicants must have completed a Master’s or higher degree and must be in the early or middle stage of their career, with at least two years of practical experience.
  • Applicants must be employed by a university, government agency or research entity in their home country.
  • Applicants must demonstrate their intention to continue working in their home country after completing the fellowship.

Complete application includes- completed application form, program proposal and action plan, signed approval from applicant’s home institution, two letters of recommendation, official copy of transcript for college/university degree(s), and copy of passport identification page.
